You Can No Longer Wear Stairs As Shorts In Stardew Valley, But There’s A Great Replacement

Stardew Valley is a game full of whimsy and surprises, so many fans were disappointed when developer ConcernedApe removed a silly glitch that let players turn a staircase into a pair of shorts. Before the update, placing a staircase into the “pants” slot on a character turned them into the “Mayor’s Lucky Shorts,” a pair of sporty purple shorts with no relation to staircases. When the update was introduced, it patched the glitch over, making it no longer possible to put on stairs like a pair of pants.




The fix has been in Stardew Valley since Update 1.6 first released earlier this year, but was recently rediscovered by console and mobile players when they finally got the update earlier this month. Reddit’s Agile_Paper457 brought it to the attention of the community through a post titled succinctly, “NOOOOOO.“

The patch notes state that the “ability to equip staircase as pants to obtain trimmed lucky purple shorts” has been fixed, much to the despair of many players. Something about the silly nature of the glitch appealed to many fans, leading to disappointment of its removal from the game. Luckily, ConcernedApe did not leave fans empty-handed, and added a secret Easter egg related to the stair-pants glitch.

Finding The Easter Egg Still Involves A Staircase

Reddit user rt_lilmstar tells players not to be too sad, since ConcernedApe “would never take something so enjoyable away from us unless he had a plan.” They then suggest that all Stardew Valley players disappointed by the removal of the error try to put a staircase in Mayor Lewis’ bedroom “and see what secrets you find.” Other comments suggest the same, but don’t actually say what happens when players do this, because it’s a delightful Easter egg for players to discover on their own.


Warning: The following paragraph spoils what happens when players use a staircase in the Mayor’s bedroom. Fans who don’t want this spoiled for them should skip ahead to the next section.Using a staircase in Lewis’ bedroom takes the player into the basement, where a dark maze of boxes and barrels ends with the purple shorts as a prize. Players who make it through the maze will find themselves chased by a pair of ghostly floating shorts that follow them around until they leave the basement. Returning to the staircase lets players escape with their newfound loot. This can be repeated indefinitely, and players can stack up to 999 Lucky Purple Shorts.

He Could Have Simply Removed the Glitch

The stairs-into-shorts glitch is, at the end of the day, an error. Many other developers would have simply patched over the glitch, removing it from the game entirely. Stardew Valley’s creator ConcernedApe, though, cares too much about his community to simply take away something fun from them, even if it was an error to begin with.
