Yasir Al-Rumayyan set to back Eddie Howe with big plans in place this summer – Report

After reporting on PIF’s ambitious ‘Project 2023’ plans at Newcastle United, The Telegraph have also shared details of the club’s outlook heading into a huge summer transfer window.

It’s been a tough few years off the pitch, with PSR issues to manage, a few high-profile exits at boardroom level and a difficult period for CEO Darren Eales following a cancer diagnosis.

However, this summer could be a turning point after no major first-team signings over the past few windows, with our financial position much improved and PIF’s ambition still strong.

According to The Telegraph, Newcastle United chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan remains a huge fan of Eddie Howe and looks set to back the 47-year-old this summer now our PSR issues have eased.

During meetings on Tyneside last month that discussed ‘Project 2030’, it’s believed the PIF governor praised the job Howe has done in tough circumstances, feeling he remains the ‘long-term’ appointment needed to build this team into a trophy-winning side.

However, to do that Newcastle need new signings, more quality and fresh investment and Luke Edwards’ piece for The Telegraph states the club plan to strengthen in ‘every department’ this summer.

A big summer with ‘ambitious’ transfer plans has been discussed, with the club determined to build around Alexander Isak and other star players; not sell them to any of our ‘big six’ rivals.

It’s thought our much-improved PSR position and the ‘headroom’ that has created will not only offer money to spend, but put us in a strong position to retain our best players.

It’s highly unlikely that Newcastle have finalised transfer plans at this stage of the year, but there are a few obvious areas of the squad in need of investment.

A quality right-winger is long overdue, especially now Jacob Murphy is our only option down that side following Miguel Almiron’s exit, while another striker will surely arrive if Callum Wilson’s contract run down this summer.

At the other end, a young, athletic right-sided centre-back is another priority now Fabian Schar is starting to show signs of regression and a goalkeeper is also being targeted, with Burnley’s James Trafford tipped to arrive.
