Manchester United’s decision to appoint Ruben Amorim as Erik ten Hag’s replacement is yet to yield dividends. The Dutchman was removed from his position in October last year, and the Portuguese head coach took charge at the Theatre of Dreams the following month.
The Red Devils struggled for the remainder of the 2024/25 campaign, finishing 15th in the league and losing the Europa League final 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur.
Amorim’s poor record at Old Trafford
The Premier League giants invested more than £200 million in the squad over the summer in a bid to turn around the team’s fortunes. Much of the resources were focused in attack, where Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko were brought in to forge a new-look front three.
Amorim also signed talented Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens to address a pressing issue in the squad, but results are yet to improve.
While there have been signs of revival, United entered the weekend 10th in the Premier League table, already 11 points behind leaders Arsenal. The Red Devils were also knocked out of the EFL Cup in the second round by League Two minnows Grimsby Town.
Amorim, meanwhile, has registered 21 wins and 20 defeats in his 55 games in charge so far at Old Trafford, recording a 38.18% win ratio. It now appears that the English giants are losing patience with the Portuguese.
United monitoring Xavi
According to Fichajes, United have their eyes on Xavi as a possible replacement for Amorim. The Spanish manager won the LaLiga title with Barcelona in the 2022/23 season, but is yet to take up his next assignment since leaving Camp Nou in the summer of 2024.

The Red Devils are long-term admirers of Xavi, and he has been linked with the hot seat at Old Trafford on previous occasions as well. The Premier League giants are reportedly displeased with the team’s lack of consistency under Amorim and view the Spaniard as the right man to lead them forward.
Xavi, meanwhile, is reportedly ready to return to football management and is looking for a stable project where he can work in collaboration with a sporting management team.
The Spaniard’s requirements are not an issue for United, although Tottenham Hotspur, who have struggled under Thomas Frank of late, are reportedly in the running as well.
The Premier League duo, however, are yet to contact the former Barcelona man, although things could change if results don’t improve in the coming weeks.
Final Thoughts
United have invested a great deal in Amorim’s philosophy, especially in reshaping their squad, and there is a belief that the club are prepared to be patient with their new head coach.
There have been significant improvements in performances this season, although the defeat to Everton has undone a lot of the good work.
Nevertheless, the Red Devils are unlikely to wield the axe so soon, especially since they are preparing for significant midfield reinforcements in 2026. As such, it may be wise to take these rumours with a pinch of salt.
🚨 JUST IN: Manchester United are looking at smaller metrics to show-fourth improvement has been made under Ruben Amorim irrespective of the results.
Examples like: big chances created, improvement in XG, a full preseason with the squad.
