Wonder Man Stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley Discuss Chances of Season 2 Renewal

Marvel Studios is kicking off its 2026 slate with Wonder Man, a Disney+ Special Presentation centered on the budding friendship between Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Simon Williams and Sir Ben Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery. Developed under Marvel Television’s Spotlight brand and created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, the series takes a look into the inner workings of Hollywood within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Williams and Slattery both put in their best efforts to be cast in an in-universe Wonder Man movie reboot, which would give both of them the career break they desperately need.

Following a massive promotional push, Wonder Man hopes to deliver a jolt of energy for the MCU with a meta look at the entertainment industry through Simon Williams’ eyes. As it hits Disney+, one of the biggest questions will be whether it earns the opportunity to move forward into Season 2. Speaking with MovieWeb’s Joe Deckelmeier, Abdul-Matten and Kingsley stayed relatively quiet on the topic but gave praise to the creative team for their dedication and teased some surprises that may be on the way:

Sir Ben Kingsley: “Oh, I’m sorry, I’m going to be very boring and give the same answer again, surprises. Because these producers and writers and directors are so clever, they so investigate this story, that it’s getting quite grand and deep. So, I think maybe some surprises will be on the way.”

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II: “And they’ve got a good handle on it. They’ve got a great handle on it.”

Will ‘Wonder Man’ Season 2 be Greenlit for Marvel Television?

Wonder Man falls into an interesting situation with Marvel Television, as it was developed under the Spotlight umbrella. The only project already released under this designation is 2024’s Echo, which brought back Alaqua Cox’s Maya Lopez after her debut in 2021’s Hawkeye series. This division was developed for fans who want to watch something from the MCU without necessarily needing to revisit other projects in MCU history to understand what is happening.

Should Wonder Man get a second season, it would be the first Marvel Studios Spotlight project to earn that honor. However, it is still difficult to predict whether that will happen, as this series and Echo are Marvel Television’s only shows made with this designation. The real indicator of whether this could happen will be seeing what other MCU shows are released under the Spotlight banner, and particularly if any come before the end of the Multiverse Saga.

While the story for Season 1 is still under wraps, interest is already building to see how Simon Williams fits into the greater MCU and where he and Trevor Slattery could go as a duo. Kingsley’s return also adds intrigue to this show’s potential to continue into Season 2 after his comeback in 2021’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings earned major acclaim.

One of Wonder Man‘s key pieces of marketing addressed the idea of “superhero fatigue,” which could continue into Season 2 depending on how the in-universe Wonder Man movie is received upon its debut. Marvel Studios and Disney have a close eye on this new series as it kicks off the MCU’s 2026 slate, and should it be renewed, Abdul-Mateen II and Kingsley will surely be front and center in helping this corner of the universe expand.

All eight episodes of Wonder Man will debut on Disney+ on Jan. 27, 2026.
