After we all grieved what seemed like the fatal retirement of Hugh Jackman from the role of Wolverine after almost two decades with the critically acclaimed comic book outing, Logan, the beloved actor made a surprise return to the part in last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine. Thanks to the MCU multiverse, it now literally looks like Marvel will have Jackman play Wolverine until he’s 90, but should they change their minds, X-Men fans have set their sights on the perfect unknown actor to take over.
While the likes of Taron Egerton, Tom Hardy, and Richard Armitage often top the list of Wolverine fan casting favorites, users on X/Twitter have turned to the unknown when looking for who should play the role if and when it’s recast for the MCU. Taking to social media, users have picked Saturday Night star Matt Wood as the man they think would make the perfect Logan as the MCU shifts into the Mutant Saga.
“Time for a recast and I know just the actor who would be perfect for it. Matt Wood for anyone wondering,” one user on X began, with reactions fully backing the choice. “Insane aura, short af, unknown/newcomer as Hugh once was, on the record saying he wants to get Chris Pratt levels of ripped. He’d be a definitive, accurate Wolvie,” added one fan with another excitedly saying, “YES! MATT WOOD IS PERFECT! HIM FOR WOLVERINE, IS WHAT DAVID CORENSWET WAS FOR SUPERMAN, IT’S RIGHT UP THERE.”
The suggestion comes following the revelation that a new “WOLVERINE” trademark has appeared on the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) website, leading many to think Marvel has a new Logan-led project in the works. While this could be a new solo outing for Hugh Jackman’s iteration, many fans are hoping that this will lead to a shake-up for the character following the release of Avengers: Secret Wars.
Is Matt Wood the Right Fit for Wolverine in the MCU?
At present, Matt Wood only has a handful of credits to his name, with his most prominent role being in last year’s Saturday Night in which he portrayed the legendary comedian, John Belushi. However, his lower profile would be perfect for Wolverine, paralleling how the role launched Hugh Jackman onto the A-list. Standing at 5’7’’, Wood matches the shorter stature of Wolverine in the comics, as well as possessing the traditionally stocky, grizzled look that fans want to see on the big screen.
“It’s genuinely such perfect casting that it won’t happen,” said another user, with further reactions adding “Wolvie also canonically isn’t your usual handsome guy, rough edges but manly. This guy is perfect,” and “oh my god he’s biblically accurate logan. im begging the mcu not to fumble this.”
Adding fuel to the fire that is fan desire, Matt Wood himself has previously addressed the idea of playing Wolverine, saying earlier this year, “You know, I’m ready. Marvel come on, juice me up, I’ll be jacked. Full Pratt, I want the chef, I want the trainer, why not? It’s crazy man.”
