We return to Premier League action for another huge game against Manchester City, as we hope to boost our chances of European football at the expense of the hosts’ title hopes.
We’re in good form on the road, having won our last three away games against Spurs, Aston Villa and Qarabag, but the Etihad is the farthest thing from a friendly hunting ground for Eddie Howe and the lads.
Let’s hope we can enact a measure of revenge for the Carabao Cup semi-final, and build up some more momentum ahead of our upcoming FA Cup fixture against Pep Guardiola’s side.
Here’s how the teams lineup for Saturday late kick-off:
Newcastle XI: Pope – Trippier, Thiaw, Burn, Hall – Tonali, Ramsey, Woltemade – Elanga, Gordon, Willock
Subs: Ramsdale, Ruddy, Joelinton, Barnes, Osula, J.Murphy, A.Murphy, Neave, Shahar
Man City XI: Donnarumma – Nunes, Dias, Guéhi, Ait-Nouri – Rodri, Bernardo, O’Reilly – Semenyo, Marmoush, Haaland
There’s just the one change from the Toon side that won 6-1 in Baku on Wednesday night, as Jacob Ramsey comes into the side and Harvey Barnes starts on the bench tonight.
Anthony Elanga grabbed our only goal here in the Carabao Cup earlier this month, and he retains his spot in the XI despite starting midweek.
Joelinton made a brief cameo appearance against Qarabag, but it looks like it’s Ramsey who gets the nod in midfield, with Joe Willock playing further forward in the attack. If that’s the case, Woltemade will be deployed in a midfield role once again.
Sven Botman is yet to make his return to the squad, with Dan Burn and Malick Thiaw retaining their place after a pair of excellent performances during our European exploits.
There’s still no Lewis Miley or Yoane Wissa to call upon either, as each are dealing with their respective injuries. Wissa will likely be back for Tuesday’s Champions League return leg however, whilst Miley should return within the next fortnight.
And for the hosts, there’s the frightening attack of Haaland, Marmoush and Semenyo to contend with tonight. Whilst Haaland’s record against us is rather poor, Semenyo and Marmoush are each fantastic, and will be a big task for Trippier and Hall tonight.
Let’s get all three points tonight. Howay The Lads!
