Warning: Spoilers for We Were Liars.
Touted as a psychological thriller, Prime Video’s We Were Liars follows 17-year-old Cady Sinclair (Emily Alyn Lind) as she tries to piece together her memory following a tragic accident from the previous summer. A self-proclaimed and proud “Liar,” along with her cousins, Mirren (Esther McGregor) and Johnny (Joseph Zada), and best friend, Gat (Shubham Maheshwari), Cady’s efforts ultimately lead her to a heartbreaking revelation no one was expecting. Based on the young adult novel of the same name by E. Lockhart, the series is layered with a blossoming teen romance, complicated family drama, and plenty of mysteries that keep viewers wondering until the very end.
As the oldest grandchild of the illustrious and ridiculously wealthy Sinclair family, Cady’s life was seemingly ideal. Every summer spent on her family’s private island was perfect. That is, until Summer 16, when tragedy landed her in the hospital with no memory of what happened and no Liars to comfort her during her recovery. Only when she returned to the family island and confronted her fellow Liars did Cady discover the truth about why no one ever called or came to see her in the wake of her accident.
With an ending that was equal parts shocking and tragic, the truth about Cady’s accident inevitably sparks more questions. Just as viewers think they have it all figured out, the show’s final moments offer a cliffhanger and the possibility of another season.

As the anniversary of Cady’s accident approaches, the truth about what happened is finally revealed. Fed up with the transactional love and antiquated expectations of the Sinclair family, the Liars decide to burn it all down the moment they find themselves alone on the island. With Cady as the ringleader, they set the mansion ablaze and rid the family of so many of the material items their mothers had always fought about. Unfortunately, their plan doesn’t unfold as expected.
Promising to light their matches at the stroke of midnight, none of them anticipated just how quickly the fire would spread, nor did they think about the gas line. Mirren and Johnny unknowingly trapped themselves inside as Gat grew impatient and concerned while he waited for everyone on the boat. Worried about Cady, he ran inside the house just as she was fleeing, but they missed one another. With Mirren, Johnny, and now Gat inside, fire struck the gas line and set off a massive explosion.

‘Maxton Hall’ Season 2 Is Turning Up the Heat
Calling all Ruby and James lovers, we finally have some details about ‘Maxton Hall’ Season 2. Here’s what to expect from the new season.
As the only survivor, Cady finally remembers that she actually did exit the house while Gat was on the boat but ran back inside to save the dogs. Unfortunately, they were trapped and couldn’t be saved. In the process, debris fell on her head. Nevertheless, she was still able to escape, but only after taking the time to retrieve the black pearl necklace that her mother and aunts argued about all summer in the wake of her grandmother’s death.
Such a delay caused Gat to leave the boat, which resulted in his death. Had Cady stuck to the plan, he’d likely still be alive. Riddled with guilt, Gat’s ghost or hallucination ultimately helps Cady forgive herself for how everything unfolded, which leads viewers to wonder whether the island is somehow haunted or whether Cady was simply seeing things because of her trauma.
Are the Other Liars Actually Ghosts or Just Hallucinations?
All summer long, it turns out Cady was hallucinating, well, maybe. The people she loved most never contacted her or visited her after her accident because they couldn’t. Only when she returned to the island was her traumatized brain able to conjure them. That being said, it’s entirely possible her beloved fellow Liars were more than mere figments of her imagination. Given she was only able to see after she arrived on the island, it’s reasonable to assume they might in fact be ghosts who are somehow trapped.
Whether the Liars are actually ghosts or just hallucinations, the answer to such a question ultimately lies with the audience and can be interpreted either way. There’s plenty of evidence throughout the show to support either theory. However, the final moments allude to a more definitive answer and the possibility of another season.
Will There Be a ‘We Were Liars’ Season 2?
While there’s currently no indication a second season is on the way, the speculation regarding one makes sense. Whether or not viewers believe Cady was hallucinating the Liars or actually talking to their ghosts, the show’s final scene suggests the ghost theory might hold more weight. While making her final rounds in the house before leaving the island for the summer, Carrie (Mamie Gummer) sneaks some pills in the kitchen, only to be interrupted by Johnny.

Who Will Belly End Up With in Prime Video’s ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’?
With Season 3 on the horizon, who will Belly end up with this summer in ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’?
Briefly startled by his presence, it’s clear she was not surprised to see him, she simply thought he had left. He informs her that he doesn’t think he can leave just before the show cuts to black and the credits roll. Because of this epilogue of sorts, it would suggest Johnny is in fact a ghost and somehow trapped on the island. Mirren and Gat might be suffering the same fate, but viewers aren’t given any clues about them. Rather, a cliffhanger and the possibility of another season is all viewers are ultimately left to contemplate.
