It takes very little for internet users to pick up on a small moment and blow it into something huge. That happened over the weekend when a clip of A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms stars Peter Claffey and his young costar Dex Sol Ansell seemed to hint that Henry Cavill could have an upcoming role in the series. This led to Claffey taking to Instagram to try and shut down the escalating rumors of Cavill’s casting as Daemon Blackfyre.
The “slip-up” of Cavill’s casting “announcement” happened during a filmed interview at New York Comic Con which surfaced online over the weekend. The clip showed Claffey checking whether they could discuss certain aspects of the show with those present, before sharing some comparisons between Ser Dunk and Cavill’s The Witcher character, Geralt of Rivea. In the middle of the conversation, Ansell questioned if it was OK to talk about some things, and then added, “Can we say that Henry Cavill is…” at which point, Claffey quickly cut in, saying, “No, no, God don’t say that. Sorry, you didn’t hear that.”
Some quickly took this to be a huge spoiler reveal and that Claffey had prevented Ansell from spilling that Cavill was about to appear in the series. However, as he later cleared up in an Instagram post, this was never actually the case. He wrote:
“Just to clarify, the thing Dex was referring to in the interview had nothing to do with Henry Cavill coming into the show or the GoT universe (I wish!). Complete misunderstanding.”
‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Is Doing Just Fine Without Henry Cavill
While there are some TV shows that could definitely gain a boost from having a prominent, ever-present name like Cavill join their roster of stars. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has proven it can send the Game of Thrones franchise to new heights without any big-name cameos. After starting the season with some uncertainty over whether a Game of Thrones show that didn’t have bombastic battles and awesome dragons could capture the attention with just some low-level character stories set in and around a Westeros that has not been seen very often.
However, after just a few episodes, it became clear that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was not attempting to replicate the shows that came before it, but instead make people care about a completely different type of Thrones series. And it did so in style.
The most recent episodes have landed among the highest-rated episodes of the entire Game of Thrones franchise, with Episode 5 initially equally Breaking Bad with the highest ever IMDb score for a TV episode. While that score has slipped slightly, the show is still continuing to grow week on week. With one episode to go, there seems to be nothing that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms can do to ruin the incredible performance of the first season of what has been the most surprising and well-received Game of Thrones project yet.
