Will Ferrell to Star in Dirty Harry-Style Comedy, Street Justice

Will Ferrell is taking it to the streets in his next film, and he’ll be delivering (comedic) justice while he’s at it. The former Saturday Night Live funnyman and current star of the poignant documentaryWill & Harper is reportedly in talks to star in the next film from comedy director Peter Atencio, a Dirty Harry-style feature called Street Justice.

In new reporting from Deadline, Ferrell will produce and star in the new film for 20th Century Studios, being touted as “a Dirty Harry type who goes about taking justice into his own hands,” based on a script and original idea from screenwriter David Callaham. This will be the second collaboration between Callaham and Atencio, who previously worked on Jean-Claude Van Johnson together, an action comedy television series starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as a heightened version of himself that they worked on together for Prime Video.

Will Ferrell has remembered the first disastrous test screening of Anchorman as the movie celebrates its 20th anniversary.

What’s the Story Behind Street Justice?

Though specific plot details are being kept under wraps, we do know that Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum will serve as producers on behalf of Gloria Sanchez Productions, alongside David Koplan. Callaham will also serve as an executive producer.

Previous work from Atencio includes the features Keanu and The Machine, as well as television projects like the aforementioned Jean-Claude Van Johnson, as well as Key & Peele, The Last Man on Earth, and The Afterparty. His most recent project is the upcoming live-action/animation hybrid feature, Animal Friends (featuring the talents of Ryan Reynolds, Jason Momoa, Vince Vaughn, and Aubrey Plaza), for Legendary.

Callaham himself has a slew of flashy writing credits to his name, including Wonder Woman 1984, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. He also contributed to the script for the upcoming live-action Masters of the Universe movie that stars Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, and Alison Brie.

As for Ferrell, in addition to his currently beloved documentary Will & Harper— a roadtrip film following Ferrell and his best friend Harper Steele as she crosses the country for the first time since coming out as transgender— the actor can also be seen in the forthcoming Reese Witherspoon wedding comedy, You‘re Cordially Invited, from director Nick Stoller, as well as the Netflix series Golf, which co-stars Ramy Youssef.
