‘Wicked’ To Be Digitally Released Next Week on December 31

Wicked, the blockbuster that dominated the box office in the last quarter of 2024, is releasing on digital platforms sooner than you can warm up your vocal cords and provide your best rendition of “Defying Gravity.”

Per a report by Variety, the musical by Jon M. Chu will land on digital services on December 31, just in time to make New Year’s Eve a karaoke night, and you can torture your family by singing every musical piece in the movie. It will be available to rent or purchase on platforms like Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Comcast, Xfinity, and others.

A few weeks ago, we reported that the film would also be released on a limited edition 4K Blu-ray collector’s edition set at a stupidly high price. However, Variety also reports that on February 4, Wicked will also see its release on the physical formats 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD. Hopefully, these will come at a regular price.

The digital release of Wicked, aka Wicked: Part One, also comes with some goods. It includes a singalong version of the film and a huge number of extras, like a making-of documentary and a featurette that expands on the film’s connection with the classic Broadway production of the same name. Of course, the singalong feature of the release will surely please fans of the musical. After all, some of them were called out on social media as people started posting pictures of the film on the internet. Not only that, they recorded themselves singing in the movie theaters. Detractors were quick to react to this.

‘Wicked’ Is Singing Its Way Into the Award Season

Starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, the film has amassed a huge amount of money at the box office. It has made more than $585 million internationally, and it quickly became the sixth highest-grossing film of the year. The sequel, Wicked: For Good, is set to be released next year on November 21, 2025.

A few weeks after its release, the film was in the spotlight when critics and award organizations started rounding up the selections for the best films of the year, and Wicked was in many of those lists. When the Golden Globe nominations were announced, the movie was mentioned in four categories: Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy (Erivo), and Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture (Grande). It’s pretty obvious that the Academy Awards are next for Wicked, and PR firms must be campaigning hard for this.

Wicked is based on the Broadway stage musical of the same name that was inspired by L. Frank Baum’s books that were then adapted to the big screen in the Hollywood classic The Wizard of Oz.
