For those that can’t get enough of Stephen King adaptations, fans of the author’s work will witness the highly anticipated prequel to the It film adaptation very soon. It: Welcome to Derry premieres on HBO and HBO Max in October (no specific date has been announced yet), and to make horror fans more excited than they already are, the streamer has just released another teaser trailer. To be honest, this one looks very creepy.
The teaser was unveiled by HBO right as the show had its showcase at the San Diego Comic-Con, where series creators Andy and Barbara Muschietti talked about the production. They confirmed that the show will explore the origins of Pennywise, and how It (the entity) eventually took the form of the evil clown. The creative team also said that they’re not planning to “solve” all the mysteries in the book.
The It: Welcome to Derry trailer provides an extended look at the horror series, which is based on the interludes from the King novel. Of course, it will expand upon them with some key new characters and storylines. Although Pennywise is a huge part of the lore of It, there are many other subplots in the book that warrant further development. It has been said that the series will jump from three different time periods, focusing on different inflection points in which Pennywise appears in the town. Also seen in the trailer is a reference to Shawshank prison, which is not only the setting of the 1994 popular adaptation The Shawshank Redemption, but it is also the prison that King has used in his shared universe.

The filmmaker shared his gratitude over getting the chance to adapt the underrated story.
The HBO series stars an entirely new cast that’ll join Bill Skarsgård in his reprisal of the classic villain Pennywise the Clown. The main cast includes Jovan Adepo, Taylour Paige, Chris Chalk, Stephen Rider, Madeleine Stowe, James Remar, and Dean Yool, among others. The show was created by the Muschietti siblings, Andy and Barbara, alongside franchise producer Jason Fuchs. Andy Muschietti is credited with writing and directing some of the episodes.
‘It: Welcome to Derry’ Joins the Divisive Land of Horror Prequels
Contrary to what many believe, horror prequels haven’t always worked in expanding an early mythos, or providing a narrative backdrop to a popular story. Movies like Exorcist: The Beginning (or its alternative Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist), Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, and The Nun series, have done well, but some can feel like cash grabs for fans.
Nevertheless, there are others that are quite good as standalone films, and also add the expected prequel value. Prometheus, Annabelle: Creation, and Ouija: Origin of Evil stand out, and, in some cases, they outshine the original movies they were inspired by. When it comes to TV prequels, Bates Motel is the perfect example of an origin story that develops the original idea but also gives itself the liberty to become its own entity. The 1990 made-for-TV film Psycho IV: The Beginning is also a prequel to Hitchcock’s horror classic that stands well on its own.
It: Welcome to Derry is one of several upcoming series that will try to expand its original universe. A24’s production of Crystal Lake will explore the origins of the Friday the 13th villain Jason Voorhees, while Alien: Earth will take place before 1979’s Alien in a franchise timeline that has already had prequels. It is undoubtedly an exciting time for horror fans who always want more from their favorite franchises.
