Action star Vin Diesel ditches his beloved family to set off as a lone wolf warrior in one of his most divisive movies. And, while the sci-fi action outing may have caused a divide among critics and audiences alike, it has found popularity more than a decade after release thanks to free streaming.
While Diesel is best known as the muscle-car-driving, family-loving criminal-turned-secret agent Dominic Toretto in the Fast and Furious franchise, his best character is arguably that of the mysterious intergalactic convict Richard B. Riddick. After being introduced all the way back in 2000’s Pitch Black, before returning in the more expansive The Chronicles of Riddick in 2004, Diesel brought Riddick back for 2013’s Riddick, which returns the franchise to the more isolated thrills of the first outing.

Every Vin Diesel Superhero Movie, Ranked From Good to Best
‘Fast & Furious’ star Vin Diesel has starred in 7 superhero movies throughout his career. Here’s how they rank against each other.
Directed by David Twohy, Riddick stars Jordi Mollà, Matt Nable, Katee Sackhoff, Dave Bautista, Bokeem Woodbine, Raoul Trujillo, and Karl Urban alongside Diesel, and follows the outlaw as he evades the dangers of both alien predators and vengeful mercenaries. Despite a mixed response at the time, there is clearly a big appetite for more from Riddick, with the sci-fi action flick now climbing the charts on free streaming platform Tubi, standing at #4 in the Top 10 alongside the likes of Titanic, Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, and Final Destination 5.
Long-Awaited Sequel ‘Riddick: Furya’ Will Reveal the Character’s Origins
Despite taking things back to the isolated brooding of Pitch Black, Riddick’s bold choices (the first ten minutes contain no dialogue) caused the sci-fi action to receive a divided response. The Riddick movie now holds ratings of 58% from critics and 56% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and while it’s unlikely to win over any new fans, those already enamored with the character will no doubt find Riddick a satisfyingly gripping adventure before the upcoming sequel is unleashed. You can check out the official synopsis for Riddick below…
“Left for dead on a sun-scorched planet, fugitive Riddick (Vin Diesel) fights for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he has yet encountered. His only hope for escape is to activate an emergency beacon, but that brings with it a different problem: mercenaries. The first ship carries an especially violent and lethal group; the second is led by a man from Riddick’s past. With time running out, Riddick realizes that neither group will leave without his head as trophy.”
Speaking of a sequel, Riddick 4, which will be titled Riddick: Furya, is now in the works. Vin Diesel has taken to social media several times over the last few months to share images and even footage from the sci-fi sequel. Set to be written and directed once again by David Twohy, the sci-fi action sequel will find Diesel back as the iconic character. Other casting details currently remain unknown, but a synopsis for Riddick: Furya does reveal clues regarding the plot:
“Riddick finally returns to his home world, a place he barely remembers and one he fears might be left in ruins. But there he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new monster. And some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined.”
