USMNT weekend viewing guide: Winter wonder

Injuries seem to be cropping up yet again but there is still a good deal of action to watch this weekend with significant matches across the continent. Here’s what we’re keeping an eye on.

Saturday

Preston North End v Leeds United – 7:30a on Paramount+

Brenden Aaronson picked up his fifth goal of the season for Leeds on Tuesday in a 3-1 win over Middlesbrough. Leeds are currently in second place, a point behind league leading Sheffield United, and will host mid-table Preston North End this weekend.

Borussia Monchengladbach v Holstein Kiel – 9:30a on ESPN+

Joe Scally is once again starting every match for Borussia Monchengladbach and playing the full 90’ nearly every match as well. That was the case again last weekend as Gladbach played Borussia Dortmund to a 1-1 draw. Gladbach face a Holstein Kiel side this weekend who are looking for just their second win of the season.

Union Berlin v Bochum – 9:30a on ESPN+

Jordan Pefok saw 20’ off the bench last weekend in Berlin’s 3-2 loss to Stuttgart. Union have now lost three straight and are winless in their past six matches. Berlin have fallen to twelfth place and will look to get back on track against a Bochum side that have just two points through thirteen matches.

Liverpool v Fulham – 10a on Peacock

Antonee Robinson rumors are picking up again heading into the January window but for now he and Fulham will travel to Liverpool to take on the league leaders. Fulham played Arsenal to a draw on Sunday, a solid result against a top three side though they fell to tenth place in a very crowded second tier of the Premier League table.

Sevilla v Celta Vigo – 12:30p on ESPN Deportes and ESPN+

Luca de la Torre saw his first league minutes of the season last Friday as Celta Vigo defeated Mallorca 2-0. It was just three minutes but a good sight none the less for a player who has struggled with injuries to start the season and was reportedly not in the teams plans.

Heerenveen v PSV – 12:45p on ESPN+

Ricard Pepi, Malik Tillman, and Richard Ledezma all scored last weekend as PSV thrashed Twente 6-1. Midweek Pepi and Ledezma started the Champions League match on the bench but came in for the second half but PSV fell to Brest 1-0.

Juventus v Venezia – 2:45p on Paramount+

Weston McKennie returned from injury to score a banger against Manchester City in Champions League action on Wednesday, a goal that was assisted by Tim Weah as well. In league play Juventus have not lost a match all season but have drawn three straight and are currently in sixth place. The will look to get back to their winning ways this weekend as they face Gianluca Busio and last place Venezia.

Reims v Monaco – 3p on beIN Sports

Folarin Balogun has suffered another injury and is reportedly set to miss an extended period. Third place Monaco will travel to Reims this weekend.

Sunday

Brighton and Hove Albion v Crystal Palace – 9a on USA Network

Chris Richards and Matt Turner were both unused substitutes last weekend as Crystal Place held Man City to a 2-2 draw. Richards has been unable to work his way back into the lineup since going out with injury in September.

Celtic v Rangers – 10:30a on Paramount+

Cameron Carter-Vickers, Auston Trusty and Celtic face Rangers in the Scottish League Cup on Sunday. Celtic are once again running away with the Scottish Premiership title

Borussia Dortmund v Hoffenheim – 11:30a on ESPN+

Gio Reyna received his first start of the season on Wednesday in Borussia Dortmund’s 3-2 loss to Barcelona in Champions League action. Reyna would play the first 73’ minutes of the match and BVB were tying 1-1 when he left the field but would concede two goals to Ferran Torres over the last fifteen minutes. Dortmund are currently in seventh place in a very tight second tier with nine points separating eleven teams in second through eleventh place. Their opponent this weekend is fourteenth place Hoffenheim.

Villarreal v Real Betis – 12:30p on ESPN Deportes and ESPN+

Johnny Cardoso returned from injury on Thursday to play 45’ minutes in Real Betis’ 1-0 win over Petrocub in Conference League action. Cardoso had missed the past month due to a knee injury but is back on the field for Betis who are visiting fifth place Villarreal on Sunday.

PSG v Olympique Lyon – 2:45p on beIN Sports

Tanner Tessmann looks like he is in a substitute role for Lyon who have won six of their past nine and haven’t lost a league match since mid-September. Lyon are in fifth place and will look to keep their unbeaten streak against a PSG side who has yet to suffer a defeat this season.

AC Milan v Genoa – 2:45p on Paramount+

Christian Pulisic is expected to miss a couple more weeks but Yunus Musah has started three straight league matches as well as AC Milan’s 2-1 win over Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday in the Champions League. Milan fell to Atalanta last weekend to fall twelve points back of the league leaders and currently trail fourth place Fiorentina by nine points.
