USMNT weekend viewing guide: getting close

There’s no broadcast action on Friday but there are a couple of solid head to head matchups this weekend including Gianluca and Venezia looking to stave off relegation by taking advantage of AC Milan’s poor league form. Here’s what we’re watching this weekend, starting with Saturday’s matchups:

Saturday

Dundee United v Celtic – 7:30a on Paramount+

Cameron Carter-Vickers and Celtic handled St, Johnstone 5-0 last weekend in Scottish FA Cup action though Auston Trusty did not make it off the bench in the win. Celtic now travel to Dundee United who are in fifth place, though they have won three straight matches.

Hoffenheim v Borussia Dortmund – 9:30a on ESPN+

Gio Reyna was an unused substitute again last weekend and has not appeared in the past six league matches for his club as it clearly seems he is on his way out the door this summer. Dortmund are in seventh place, four points back of fourth place RB Leipzig with four matches remaining.

Wolfsburg v Freiburg – 9:30a on ESPN+

Kevin Paredes saw the field for the first time this season as he started and picked up an assist last weekend in Wolfsburg’s 2-2 draw with Mainz. Wolfsburg remain in 12th place with the draw.

Holstein Kiel v Borussia Monchengladbach – 9:30a on ESPN+

John Tolkin has started three straight and Holstein Kiel drew RB Leipzig to pick up a point though they remain in last place and three points out of safety. They face Joe Scally and ninth place Borussia Monchengladbach who are just three points back of qualifying for European competition next season.

Southampton v Fulham – 10a on Peacock

Antonee Robinson and Fulham have lost two straight and three of four as they have fallen to ninth place, nine points out back of last weekends opponent, Chelsea who are in sixth place.

Crystal Palace v Aston Villa – 12:15p on ESPN+

Chris Richards and Crystal Palace face Aston Villa in FA Cup action on Saturday afternoon. Richards was not included in Palace’s midweek squad which drew Arsenal 2-2 in league play as he was suspended due to the second (very weak) yellow he picked up last weekend in Palace’s scoreless draw with Bournemouth.

Le Havre v Monaco – 1p on beIN Sports

Folarin Balogun has appeared in four straight matches as a substitute for Monaco who drew last weekend and are a point ahead of Lille for third place and the final Champions League qualifying position in Ligue 1.

Olympique Lyonnais v Stade Rennais – 3:05p on beIN Sports

Tanner Tessmann and Lyon are now three points back of Monaco after losing last weekend and falling to sixth place in the Ligue 1 table. Tessmann started and scored his first goal of the season but Lyon would fall to 17th place Saint-Etienne 2-1. They now face face tenth place Stade Rennais.

Sunday

Venezia v Milan – 6:30a on CBSSN and Paramount+

Gianluca Busio nearly saved Venezia from relegation last weekend as his 85th minute goal against Empoli put them in the lead and would have seen them jump Lecce in the table. However, they would give up a tying goal moments later and thus remain a point back of Lecce for safety. Venezia now faces Christian Pulisic, Yunus Musah and AC Milan who fell to Atalanta last weekend in league play, dropping them further out of the Champions League picture but they did defeat Inter Milan 3-0 midweek to advance to the Coppa Italia final.

Bournemouth v Manchester United – 9a on USA Network

Tyler Adams and Bournemouth drew with Crystal Palace last weekend and will now host Manchester United on Sunday. Bournemouth are in eighth place but eight points back of sixth place Chelsea for Europa League qualification with five matches remaining.

Nantes v Toulouse – 11:15a on beIN Sports

Mark McKenzie also received a red card last weekend and will be serving a suspension this weekend as Toulouse look to snap a five match loss streak when they face fourteenth place Nantes.

Juventus v Monza – Noon on Paramount+

Weston McKennie started and Tim Weah came off the bench midweek as Juventus’s Monday match, rescheduled to Wednesday afternoon resulted in a 1-0 loss to sixteenth place Parma. The loss dropped Juventus into fifth place, a point back of Bologna for Champions League qualification. Juventus now face Monza who are dead last in the Serie A table with just two wins, and fifteen points, in thirty-three matches.
