USMNT rise one spot to 15th in FIFA world rankings

The United States Men’s National Team may not have won the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup, but the FIFA world rankings still has them among the top teams in the world. The July 2025 rankings were released yesterday, and the USMNT have moved up 1 spot to 15th in the world.

The rankings took into account all their matches during the June international window – where the team lost to Türkiye and Switzerland in pre-Gold Cup friendlies – as well as the entire Gold Cup tournament. The USMNT won every match in the tournament until they fell 2-1 to Mexico in the final. Despite the terrible showing in the friendlies in June, the Gold Cup matches, like every competitive tournament, carry more weight in the ranking formula. In total, the USMNT gained 22.23 points to move them back into the Top 15.

Despite moving up 1 spot in the rankings, the United States is no longer the top ranked team in Concacaf. That honor belongs to Mexico, who moved up to 13th after winning their 10th Gold Cup title. Canada rose two spots to 28th and Panama moved up 3 spots to 30th. Costa Rica rose the most spots of any team in the world, vaulting 14 spots to 40th and giving Concacaf 5 teams inside the top 40 in the world.

The top 10 teams didn’t have much movement. In order, the top 10 teams in the world are Argentina, Spain, France, England, Brazil, Portugal (+1 spot), the Netherlands (-1), Belgium, Germany (+1), and Croatia (+1).

The USMNT will face two Asian teams in the September international window as they begin to start final preparations for next summer’s World Cup. They will face South Korea, who remained at 23rd in the world, on September 6th in New Jersey. They then travel to Columbus on September 9th to face Japan, who dropped 2 spots to 17th in the world. They hope to land other top teams in the October and November windows to close out the year and give themselves some tough tests before the World Cup draw occurs.
