USMNT loses to Canada, finishes fourth in Nations League

For the first time since 1985, Canada has beaten the United States in back-to-back matches. The USMNT lost 1-2 to Canada in the Concacaf Nations League third-place match. Having been the only team to win Nations League through its first three iterations, the US lost to Panama in the semifinals and then lost to Jesse Marsch’s Canada to seal their fate with a last-place finish.

USMNT manager Mauricio Pochettino made five changes to the starting lineup, bringing on Cameron Carter-Vickers, Max Arfsten, Diego Luna, Patrick Agyemang, and Mark McKenzie.

Early in the first half, Canada saw their best player, Alphonso Davies, go down injured and be forced out of the game.

Despite losing Davies, Canada opened the scoring through Tani Oluwaseyi.

The US equalizer came less than 10 minutes later. Diego Luna showed incredible calmness in the box to tap the ball to Patrick Agyemang, who slotted it home deflected off the keeper.

Canada had two second-half penalty shouts in quick succession. After the second, where Jonathan David wasn’t awarded a penalty kick, Canada manager Jesse Marsch exploded. The American stepped onto the field during his remonstrations, receiving a red card for his trouble.

Five minutes after his penalty shout, Jonathan David scored the game-winner for Canada.

What are your takeaways from this loss? Where does the team go from here? What are the steps between now and the World Cup next summer?
