The USMNT once again scored early but this time were unable to hold on as Mexico came back to win the Gold Cup Final 2-1 on Sunday night. Chris Richards opened the scoring just four minutes into the match after Patrick Agyemang, who was hacked all night, won a free kick which Sebastian Berhalter served up and Richards headed in.
However, it was once again all downhill from there as Mexico would dominate possession for the remainder of the match. They equalized in the 27th minute off Raul Jimenez’s tidy finish following some half-hearted defending by both Alex Freemen and Tim Ream.
Freeman had a chance to break the tie in stoppage time of the first half but his header was blocked in a Scott Sterling-esque face save by Mexican keeper Luis Malagon. The score would stay level until 30 minutes into the second half when Mexico would score a set piece goal of their own. Initially ruled offside, Edson Alvarez was judged to have been held on by Alex Freeman after an initial deflection.
Up a goal Mexico allowed the US to have a bit more of the ball for the final ten minutes plus stoppage time but they were unable to convert and Mexico would end the match the victors.
