A pair of early goals, provided by Diego Luna, were enough for the USMNT on Wednesday as they held on for a 2-1 victory over Guatemala to advance to the Gold Cup finals. Luna scored just four minutes in after a fortunate bounce landed at the feet of Luca de la Torre, whose shot was blocked but Luna was quick to pounce on the rebound to give the US the lead. Then just ten minutes later Luna would add a second off a Malik Tillman assist.
One might think the early goals would set the US up to coast the rest of the way but it was a real struggle from that point forward as Guatemala would out possess the US and outshoot them as well. Matt Freese made four saves on the night, holding off Guatemala until the 80th minute when they broke through with a goal from second half substitute Olger Escobar.
That would be all for Guatemala though as the US would hold on to finish with the 2-1 advantage and advance to face Mexico in Sunday’s Gold Cup Final.
