Underrated A24 Horror Thriller ‘The Front Room’ Sets Streaming Release Date

As the year comes to a close, movie audiences look back at the movies of 2024, especially as they make their way to streaming platforms for more to enjoy. Now, A24 has announced that the horror project by famous brothers Sam and Max Eggers and starring Brandy is getting another shot with audiences. With their brother Robert Eggers’ new vampire flick Nosferatu releasing soon, Max Eggers and Sam Eggers are gaining more attention every day. A24 has now set a streaming release date for their recent writing and directing collaboration titled The Front Room, which will land on Max on January 3.

The horror outing will also get a linear premiere on HBO the next day, Saturday, January 4, at 8:00 p.m. Eastern. The film originally released in theaters on September 6th of this year, raking in a meager $3.8 million at the box office and flying under the radar for many horror fans. Based on the short story by Susan Hill, The Front Room follows Brandy, playing a newly-pregnant woman named Belinda who has to deal with her mother-in-law from hell, played by Kathryn Hunter. As her uber-Christian mother-in-law tries to replace her, Belinda must face the demons inside her house to protect her family.

While Max and Sam Eggers had worked with their talented brother Robert Eggers in the past, this time, they wanted to do ther own thing. In true Eggers fashion, they made an extremely uncomfortable film that is sure to scare even those with the upmost respect for their in-laws. Other stars in the cast include Andrew Burnap and Neal Huff. The A24 film was produced by Lucan Toh, Babak Anvari, David Hinojosa, and Julia Oh. The Front Room is also already available for purchase or rent on platforms like Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video.

The Eggers Family Is Carving Out a Legacy in Horror Moviemaking

With Robert Eggers being the older brother to twins Max and Sam, the younger Eggers brothers have watched and even helped their older brother make his now well-known horror films. The twins have been very vocal about how their brother inspires them, and specifically, how watching and working on his gothic, psychological tale The Lighthouse directly inspired their endeavors in their own careers, like The Front Room. Max Eggers even told MovieWeb about how he’d never forget witnessing the press’s response to the first screening of The Lighthouse:

“There were people engaging with it — and in that screening, I remember the press was talking back to the screen with The Lighthouse, and I’ve never seen that before. But yeah, I mean, we intended with this, like The Lighthouse, I think we want there to be pleasure in the misery. I think the beauty of horror is that you can talk about so many things and get away with so many difficult subjects that you can’t in any other genre.”

The Eggers brothers are a group of horror masters in the making, with each project getting better and scarier than the last as they learn from each other’s work. Although The Front Room did not have much success in theaters, streaming audiences are about to have the opportunity to experience the pleasure in the misery that the Eggers twins intently crafted.
