The vacant featherweight championship is on the line Saturday night when former champion Alexander Volkanovski takes on rising star Diego Lopes. Volkanovski vs. Lopes serves as the main event of a very intriguing event at UFC 314 in Miami.
Volkanovski lost the title to Ilia Topouria in his most recent fight, suffering a devastating knockout. Rather than sticking around to defend the title, Topouria chose to make the jump to lightweight, leaving the belt vacant for this crossroads fight between Volkanovski, who held the title for more than four years, and Lopes, who will be fighting in his first UFC main event.
The undercard features some of the better matchups of the year, and ones that could affect the title picture in multiple divisions. The biggest comes in the co-main event where Paddy Pimblett looks to get closer to a title opportunity at lightweight against veteran Michael Chandler. Another veteran of the Bellator MMA ranks gets his first chance to make the walk to the Octagon on Saturday when Patricio Pitbull takes on top featherweight Yair Rodriguez. And more highly ranked featherweights do battle on the main card with a little extra spice to it when Bryce Mitchell faces rising Brazilian striker Jean Silva.
