September 1 – UEFA has drawn the first qualifying round of its Champions League which will also complete the line-up for its new Women’s Europa Cup that will debut this season.
UEFA also unveiled the brand identity for the Women’s Europa Cup saying the “graphic patterns represent the journey of the winning team, progressing through the rounds of home and away knock-out matches and culminating with the trophy lift at the end of the season.”
The draw set nine two-legged ties to decide the last places in the new 18-club league phase. Matches will be played on 11 and 18 September 11 and 18.
The draw was split into two paths: the champions path (for domestic champions) and the league path. There will be four ties in the champions path and five in the league path.
The winners of each third qualifying round tie qualify for the Women’s Champions League league phase. The nine defeated teams will enter the new Women’s Europa Cup at the second qualifying round stage.
The draw saw some big club match-ups in the League path with Real Madrid meeting Eintracht Frankfurt and Manchester United up against Norway’s SK Brann.
In an intriguing tie between clubs from two of Europe’s emerging nations, Italy’s AS Roma will meet Portugal’s Sporting Club.
