Two 4/10s and a 7.5 – Newcastle player ratings from 0-0 draw at Wolves

It was another tough watch on the road yesterday, as Newcastle United looked far too predictable in a frustrating 0-0 draw at Wolves.

Here are our marks out of 10 and comments on each player involved in Sunday’s stalemate.

Pope (6.5) – Handled his business well, saving a couple of, but still causes heart attacks with the ball at his feet. Clean sheet on a day where he wasn’t called into actions too often.

Trippier (6) – Played through a nasty cut and came close to scoring from a free kick. Added his customary calmness in possession, but did struggle to really bomb on in support, owing to his lack of pace. Thankfully, that was rarely exploited by Wolves at the other end, other than one moment he was left for dead in the second half.

Thiaw (7) – Came close to breaking the deadlock in what was another solid performance. Marshalled the defence well and bailed Botman out on a couple of occasions. Found himself at right wing towards the end such was our dominance in possession.

Botman (6) – Struggled with the physicality of Arokodare at times and he was muscled away with ease on more than one occasion. Missed a chance to open the scoring after hitting the bar.

Hall (7.5*) – Continues to impress in possession with his dribbling in tight spaces a real highlight, also defending well to cut out a few Wolves breaks. Crossing was below the standard we have come to expect though and will need to sharpen that area of his game up.

Guimaraes (6) – A tale of two Bruno’s. While Tonali was on the pitch he was ineffectual and some way off the levels we’ve come to expect. Once Tonali went off then we saw a marked improvement in his performance as he had a shot on target and could’ve won it late on. It’s not the first time we’ve seen Bruno lift his performance when Tonali has left the field.

Tonali (5) – Looks knackered and nowhere near his best. At his best there aren’t many more complete midfield players in the premier league but we haven’t seen that Sandro for quite a while. Needs to get out of this form slump ASAP.

Joelinton (6.5) – Won plenty of headers and forced a rare save from Jose Sa late on. Has been making some really intelligent late runs into the box and getting into good goal scoring opportunities but lacks conviction in front of goal.

Barnes (5.5) – Whipped in a great cross for Woltemade which wasn’t converted but lacked impact out on the right. Looked a bit more spritely when shifted out onto his more favoured left wing position. Struggled to beat his marker on several occasions.

Gordon (5) – Showed a few flashes of skill to beat the defenders but lacked any semblance of end product. Over a calendar year since a goal from open play and never looked like changing that statistic.

Woltemade (4) – It’s all gone wrong for Big Nick in recent weeks. Fluffed a great headed opportunity early on and was a peripheral figure throughout. Eddie Howe has a real issue on his hands on how to get the best out of his obvious talents. It’s clear to see he’s not a number 9 and thrives off having players running off him. 2 wingers hugging the touch line just isolates him and he’s being found out at the highest level.

Miley (6) – Back to his more favoured midfield position and naturally didn’t see as much of the ball as he did at right back but brought his typical calmness in possession.

Elanga (5) – It’s just not happening. We’ve spent a lot of money on a player who is tailor made to play on the counter attack but completely ineffective against the low block (he’s far from the only one). He did whip in one good cross and made some good runs that were ignored, in his defence.

Wissa (4) – His lack of movement at times in and out of possession was striking. Was sold to us as a Premier League ready goal scorer yet never looked like getting on the end of any crosses. Needs to sharpen up and fast.
