February 20 – Turkey’s Konyaspor have released a statement this morning (Friday) confirming that five individuals associated with the club have been arrested.
The club’s official statement is in response to an ongoing legal investigation led by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office under Law No. 6222 (Law on Prevention of Violence and Disorder in Sports).
According to the statement, the detainees include оne current member of the club’s board of directors and four former members who served in previous administrations.
The statement, signed by General Secretary and Press Spokesperson Cengiz Yönet, emphasised that the club is monitoring the judicial process.
“The legal process in question is being closely and meticulously followed by our Club, and developments will be shared with the public in accordance with the principle of transparency,” the statement read.
While the specific details of the allegations have not been disclosed, Law No. 6222 typically covers regulations regarding sports-related offenses, including match-fixing, illegal betting, and stadium misconduct.
Konyaspor were one of the few Super Lig teams named in the match-fixing and illegal betting scandal that broke at the end of last year and saw the suspension of more than 1,000 players, 25 of them from the Super Lig. Sanctions were issued of between 45 days and 12 months.
Konyaspor’s Senegalese winger Alassane Ndao, received the longest ban, being suspended for 12 months.
Konyaspor currently lie in 14th position in the Turkish Super Lig, two points above the relegation zone after 22 matches.
