Trick ‘r Treat 2 Gets Scarily Good Update 10 Years After Being Announced

Since being released in 2009, Michael Dougherty’s Trick ‘r Treat has become a true cult classic. The movie was originally delayed for two years, but despite all the odds stacked against it, it found an audience that embraced it as a true modern-day Halloween classic. The cult interest was enough to see a sequel announced in 2013, but news has been scarce about the follow-up…until now. With Trick ‘r Treatreleasing a new 4K Ultra HD edition that is bound to be a treat for fans, Dougherty has offered an update on the sequel that sounds promising.

The update on the sequel comes during the new commentary track on the Ultra HD edition of the film, via Bloody Disgusting, which is moderated by Dead Meat’s James A. Janisse and Chelsea Rebecca. During the chat, Dougherty reveals that the sequel script has been written with fellow writers Todd Casey and Zach Shields, with the sequel already having been storyboarded, but the main obstacle is getting it made within the studio system, despite its cult classic status.

“It’s tricky, because I think we really did capture lightning in a bottle with this one, and it nearly killed me. What a lot of people don’t realize is that the bulk of our favorite horror movies, especially the ones that introduced new horror icons, were all independent movies.”

Much like films such as Halloween and Friday the 13th, Trick ‘r Treat was an independent production that was ultimately released direct-to-DVD by Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures two years after it was completed. Even with the film’s fanbase growing over the past 15 years, making the sequel the way Dougherty wants to make it by maintaining the first film’s non-linear storytelling, could be a bone of contention with a major studio that wants something more traditional to ensure box office success.

“There aren’t the typical metrics that a studio can point to to make it an easy ‘yes.’ Something I was adamant about in the sequel was that it has to retain this nonlinear storytelling, [and] it has to retain that weird mix of horror and comedy.”

Michael Dougherty is Pleased With the Script for Trick ‘r Treat 2

Fans should be pleased that the sequel isn’t dead, and Dougherty is still very interested in doing it, noting that he’s “very, very happy with the script for the sequel,” but he won’t compromise his choice of storytelling just to get the film made.

“I want to do it. It’s not dead by any stretch. We have some momentum moving in the right direction for sure, but I’m also of the belief that I’m not going to compromise or make sacrifice just to make a sequel. It has the be under the right conditions with the right resources. Otherwise, I will be content with just letting this be this weird little movie that fought its way through a lot of adversity.”

Trick ‘r Treat is an anthology horror film which saw Dougherty making his directorial debut. The movie features four Halloween tales that take place in Warren Valley, Ohio, with one common thread in the form of Sam, a strange trick-or-treater wearing a burlap sack over his head and orange footie pajamas. Sam is featured in each story whenever someone breaks the rules of Halloween, which has played a big part in making the movie a modern-day spooky season favorite. The film features an impressive ensemble cast that includes Anna Paquin, Brian Cox, Dylan Baker, Rochelle Aytes, Leslie Bibb and many more.

Over the last decade, Trick ‘R Treat has become an annual watch for horror fans. Let’s take a deeper dive into the Halloween favorite.

The movie didn’t have a theatrical release in the traditional sense, only scoring a series of limited screenings at film festivals. The movie scored with critics, securing an 83 percent on Rotten Tomatoes with a consensus that reads, “A deftly crafted tribute to Halloween legends, Trick ‘r Treat hits all the genre marks with gusto and old-fashioned suspense.” Despite being released direct-to-DVD, the movie gradually gained a cult following and allowed Dougherty to move on to other directorial efforts such as 2015’s Krampus and 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
