Transfer window: Deals done up, but value of transactions down

February 6 – There were a record 5,973 international transfers recorded in the January trading window for men’s football, according to data from FIFA’s Transfer Snapshot report.

But while the 3% increase in deals done took the player market to a new level, the $1.9 billion total spending was down about 18% from last year’s record $2.37 billion spend in the winter transfer window.

Unsurprisingly, English clubs were the top spenders with $363 million. Italy followed in second with $283 million, with Brazil, Germany, and France also making the top five. French clubs were the highest earners with $218 million in transfer sales.

Brazil was the country with the highest number of incoming transfers during the January 2026 transfer window. The largest share of these 456 transfers came from clubs in Portugal, followed by Japan, Uruguay, Colombia and Malta.

Brazilian clubs spent $180 million on transfers, making up the lions share of the $209 million spent by Conmebol clubs, and received $155 million. By comparison, in Argentinian football just under $20 million was spent on incoming transfers.

Women’s football saw a new record with clubs spending more than $10 million on international transfers, up 85% from the previous record a year ago. The number of international transfers however decreased by six per cent to 420. English women’s clubs were both the biggest spenders and earners.
