Sandro Tonali’s career has been full of extreme highs and lows over the past 18 months.
A ban for breaching gambling rules saw him miss the majority of last season and the start of 2024/25, but he’s come back with a bang and been absolutely brilliant for club and country since serving his time on the sidelines.
He’s excelled in a deeper midfield role under Eddie Howe and played a key role in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final win over Liverpool before heading straight to international duty with Italy.
Just a few days after celebrating our first domestic trophy in 70 years in the early hours of Monday morning, Sandro Tonali returned to the San Siro last night to take on Germany in Italy’s Nations League quarter-final first leg.
On a personal level, he opened the scoring just nine minutes in with an emphatic finish, got through 90 minutes unscathed and was the standout player for the Italians on the night.
However, despite handing them an early lead on his return to Milan, Germany completed a second half comeback as Leon Goretzka and Tim Kleindienst scored to hand the visitors a 2-1 win.
Watch the best bits from Tonali’s performance below, which features his goal; his fifth of the season for club and country:

Tonight will see England take on Albania at Wembley in Thomas Tuchel’s first game in charge of the Three Lions.
It’s an immediate return to Wembley Anthony Gordon, Dan Burn and Tino Livramento and a chance to impress the new England boss for all three, should they get minutes in the World Cup qualifier.
Burn is hoping to make his England debut after a dream Sunday saw him score and lift the Carabao Cup in that very stadium, while Gordon will be eager for minutes after missing our last two through suspension.
Bruno Guimaraes started for Brazil in the early hours of Friday morning (UK time) and picked up a booking, meaning he’s now suspended for their World Cup qualifier against Argentina next week.
