Tom Hiddleston Says He Would Never Have Played Loki If Not for “The Greatest Comic Book Movie of All Time”

Tom Hiddleston Says He Would Never Have Played Loki If Not for “The Greatest Comic Book Movie of All Time”

Tom Hiddleston‘s return as Loki in Avengers: Doomsday was never really in doubt. As the powerful MCU anti-hero holding together the timelines of the multiverse, there was no way to bring the Multiverse Saga to a close without involving the God of Mischief/God of Stories. While Hiddleston may not be willing to share details of the upcoming movie in his recent interviews, while speaking to Josh Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused podcast, the British actor did reveal which classic comic book movie character really inspired his performance as Loki.

During a lengthy interview, Hiddleston was asked a series of questions, including who his favorite Spider-Man actor is (to which he replied Tom Holland), and also what he considers the greatest comic book movie of all time. After stipulating a clause that removed his own movies from the equation, Hiddleston cited Tim Burton’s Batman as his ultimate comic book movie, and explained how Jack Nicholson influenced his MCU role as Loki.

“I truthfully don’t believe I would have played Loki without that film. The way Jack Nicholson played the Joker, at the time of my life when I saw it, it made such an impact on my imagination. I understood he was the villain, but he was having such a good time and that could describe somebody else I know.

He was so charismatic, so inventive, and so free, but I also loved Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne and Batman and I loved their dynamic. I think when I came to play Loki for the first time, I consciously carried Jack Nicholson in mind.”

Tom Hiddleston and Kenneth Branagh Had a Unique “Shorthand” Filming ‘Thor’

While Loki in the MCU is completely the creation of Tom Hiddleston – and we have all seen the footage of what could have happened if he had been cast as Thor – while filming the introductory movie to Asgard and its heroes and villains with Kenneth Branagh, Hiddleston revealed that they would often do “takes” channeling different actors.

“Because Loki was so complex and full of contradictions, charisma and charm, and also vulnerability, we would do different takes in tribute to different actors. So we did a Peter O’Toole take, which was a tribute to his sophistication and vulnerability in The Lion in Winter. Then we would do a Jack Nicholson take, where I was having the most fun in the room. And then a Clint Eastwood take, where whatever I was feeling would be hidden deep within me and you wouldn’t be able to see it, to give him different flavors in the edit.”

There is no one who could ever call Loki a two-dimensional character, and it is clear that a lot of work went into making sure that his internal conflict was realized on screen in the most accomplished way of any Marvel character to have appeared in the franchise. Now, his story will continue, and potentially end, in Avengers: Doomsday, and fans will finally see how it all comes together on December 18, 2026.
