Tom Hardy’s “Masterpiece” WWII Movie That’s “One of the Best War Films Ever Made” Explodes Onto New Streaming Home

Tom Hardy’s best war movie to date, which just so happens to be directed by a legendary director and features an all-star cast, is about to explode onto a new streaming home. Hardy has starred in some action-heavy movies over his career. The most high-octane is undoubtedly Mad Max: Fury Road, although he’s also lent his talents and physicality to Venom and its sequels, Warrior, RocknRolla, Havoc, and Christopher Nolan’s Inception and The Dark Knight Rises. Speaking of Christopher Nolan, the director reunited with Hardy for the 2017 World War 2 “masterpiece” (according to users on Rotten Tomatoes) which brought one of the most famous events from the Second World War to life on screen. We’re obviously talking about Dunkirk (unless Christopher Nolan has secretly remade Saving Private Ryan) and it’s about to land on a new streaming home.

Dunkirk will stream on HBO Max this November. The Second World War film, which depicts the real evacuation of Allied soldiers from Dunkirk, will stream on HBO Max on November 1. Tom Hardy is just one of many, many big names who feature in Dunkirk. Cillian Murphy, Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance, Barry Keoghan, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jack Lowden, Fionn Whitehead, and Harry Styles (for some reason) all make up the movie’s brilliant cast. History buffs should need no introduction to the plot of Dunkirk. But, for those who are unaware of the event, or haven’t seen the film before, the official synopsis reads:

“In May 1940, Germany advanced into France, trapping Allied troops on the beaches of Dunkirk. Under air and ground cover from British and French forces, troops were slowly and methodically evacuated from the beach using every serviceable naval and civilian vessel that could be found. At the end of this heroic mission, 330,000 French, British, Belgian and Dutch soldiers were safely evacuated.”

Dunkirk was a massive hit with both critics and audiences when it was released in 2017. The film holds a tremendous 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences were slightly more critical, although they still gave the movie an 81% rating. While every movie has its haters, Dunkirk counters that with a strong fan base who absolutely adore the movie. “Another Christopher Nolan masterpiece that I loved seeing twice in theaters and is my favorite summer time plus war movie,” wrote one user. Another wrote, “One of the best war films ever made, Dunkirk trades realistic graphic violence for sheer terror in the face of overwhelming odds.”

‘Dunkirk’s Most Divisive Element Was Its Best

As well as having a trusted troupe of actors, Christopher Nolan is also renowned for playing with time in his movies. Some films, like Tenet and Inception, do this more overtly. But even the grounded story of Dunkirk toys with the idea of time. The film follows three groups: the soldiers on the beach, an RAF pilot in the air, and the civilian sailors who rescued the Allied forces. But, each story takes a drastically different length of time. The story of the soldiers lasts for a week, the story of the sailors lasts for a day, and the story of the pilot lasts for around an hour.

However, the film doesn’t do much to make this clear until its final act. So, when audiences left theaters after watching Dunkirk for the first time, many were left confused. A large majority of the negative reviews highlight the confusing timeline as the movie’s biggest downfall. But, in the eight years since its release, it has become one of its best parts.
