Tom Hardy Western ‘Lawless’ Is Streaming Free

Hardy remains one of the most acclaimed actors in Hollywood thanks to roles in the likes of Mad Max: Fury Road, The Dark Knight Rises, Inception, and Venom, and has become well-known for transforming his vocals for each role. And 2012’s Lawless is no different. In fact, it might be one of his best.

Directed by John Hillcoat from a screenplay by singer-screenwriter Nick Cave, Lawless is based on Matt Bondurant’s historical novel The Wettest County in the World and boasts an all-star cast that includes Shia LaBeouf, Gary Oldman, Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, and Guy Pearce alongside Hardy. ‘Lawless’ Boasts One of the Quintessential Tom Hardy Performances

This story of bootlegging brothers fighting to survive during the Prohibition-era leans into western sensibilities to tell the gangster tale. Making it more of a neo-western. The movie was met with solid reviews from critics, landing a score of 67% on Rotten Tomatoes alongside 74% from audiences on the Popcornmeter. “Grim, bloody, and utterly flawed, Lawless doesn’t quite achieve the epic status it strains for, but it’s too beautifully filmed and powerfully acted to dismiss,” the critics’ consensus reads.

Lawless features one of Hardy’s quintessential performances. Barreling around the dusty surroundings and threatening his adversaries with his shoulders hunched, Lawless makes great use of both the actor’s hardman persona and his mumbling drawl.

The actor continues to be a major draw for audiences, with the Oscar-nominee finally taking the lead in The Raid director Gareth Evans’ Netflix action thriller, Havoc. Written and directed by Evans, Hardy is joined in Havoc by Academy Award-winner Forest Whitaker and star of Justified and The Mandalorian, Timothy Olyphant. Making up the rest of the supporting cast are Justin Cornwell (The Umbrella Academy, Bel-Air), Jessie Mei Li (Last Night in Soho, Shadow and Bone), Yeo Yann Yann (American Born Chinese), Quelin Sepulveda (Good Omens), Luis Guzmán (Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F), Sunny Pang (Headshot), and Michelle Waterson (Fright Night).
