Tom Hanks’ ‘Greyhound’ Sequel Starts Filming With Stephen Graham Returning

Filming is finally underway on the sequel to Tom Hanks‘ Apple TV World War II hit Greyhound. As reported by Deadline, Greyhound 2 has finally started cameras rolling in Australia, with Hanks being joined once again by Adolescence star Stephen Graham and Elisabeth Shue, with several newcomers to the franchise including Robin Hood‘s Jack Patten.

Greyhound was released on Apple TV in 2020, and as well as setting records on its debut, the film still makes frequent appearances in the streamer’s Top 10 movies chart. Starring Hanks as first-time captain Krause, who is entrusted to protect a convoy of 37 ships across the Atlantic on a mission to deliver much needed supplies and thousands of soldiers safely to their destination. This leads them into treacherous waters, where Krause and his small force must battle Nazi U-boats while ensuring they do not lose their precious cargo and soldiers.

The huge success of the movie made a Greyhound sequel always likely, and in 2022, it was announced that a follow-up movie would be heading into development. However, it was another three years before news of that sequel came that filming would finally start in early 2026. It seems that this timeline is still moving forward, with the sequel following Krause and the rest of the Greyhound crew “from the beaches of Normandy to the ocean in the Pacific as they help turn the tide of war.”

Like the first movie, the script for Greyhound 2 has been written by Hanks, with Aaron Schneider directing. The movie currently has no release date, but is expected to debut sometime in 2027.

Will ‘Greyhound 2’ Avoid the Biggest Issue With Its Predecessor?

While Greyhound was a huge success as a streaming exclusive on Apple TV, that was more by necessity than design. The film released in July 2020, right in the middle of the Covid pandemic, at a time when it was not feasible for it to be seen in cinemas. At the time, Hanks shared his displeasure at the outcome, saying it was “an absolute heartbreak” to have the movie confined to home screenings.

This time, there is no pandemic holding back Greyhound 2 from being seen in cinemas, but as of time of writing, Apple has not revealed their rollout plans for the movie. While it would make sense to put such an epic movie on the biggest screens possible, streamers always have that little niggle at the back of their minds, reminding them of just how big a movie could be as a streaming exclusive and what it can do for subscriber volumes and viewing numbers.

Although even a limited theatrical release would not hurt a subsequent streaming debut, it is getting harder to predict exactly what the likes of Apple, Amazon and Netflix will do with their original movies from one release to the next. Hopefully, Hanks’ will get his wish of seeing his Greyhound franchise on the big screen when the movie is finally released.
