Timothée Chalamet’s ‘A Complete Unknown’ Sets Hulu Streaming Release Date

Timothée Chalamet’s ‘A Complete Unknown’ Sets Hulu Streaming Release Date

After a healthy box office run, Timothée Chalamet’s A Complete Unknown is making its way to Hulu later this month. Directed by James Mangold (Walk the Line), A Complete Unknown starred Chalamet as the influential folk singer Bob Dylan and chronicled the artist’s early years. Opening on Christmas Day 2024, A Complete Unknown proved to be a box office and critical hit, earning eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Director.

Deadline confirms that A Complete Unknown will be available to stream on Hulu starting Mar. 27. It will arrive on Hulu 92 days after it opened in theaters on Dec. 25, 2024. A Complete Unknown was distributed through Searchlight Pictures, a subsidiary of the Walt Disney Company. The film became available to own on digital platforms on Feb. 25, 2025, while its physical media release date is approaching soon on Apr. 1. The biopic also stars Edward Norton, Elle Fanning, Monica Barbaro, Boyd Holbrook, and Dan Fogler.

While A Complete Unknown might have walked away without any Oscars, it certainly was a hit for the studio. Not only did Chalamet win Best Actor at the Screen Actors Guild Award, but the film was a box office success. The film grossed $74.8 million domestically and $132 million worldwide, against a reported budget between $50 and $70 million. It is the highest-grossing film from Searchlight Pictures since Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019. For comparison, Searchlight Picture’s big 2023 awards contender released in December of that year, Poor Things, grossed $117 million worldwide.

Disney’s Investment in the Theatrical Window

Even though A Complete Unknown has been available for rental and purchase on digital platforms for three weeks, its nearly three-month theatrical window before debuting on streaming is part of Disney’s long-term plans to get audiences back into seeing their films in theaters. In contrast to other studios, which will sometimes make their films available for rental or purchase just 18 days after releasing in theaters, Disney has largely stuck to giving their films lengthy theatrical runs before putting a movie on streaming or digital video platforms. Their decision to send titles like Luca and Turning Red straight to Disney+ and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to streaming just one month after it hit theaters began to train audiences to wait to see Disney movies at home. The studio has been pulling back and investing in longer theatrical windows, with 90 days seemingly the ideal timeframe.

Mufasa: The Lion King, Disney’s big 2024 holiday film, will be available to stream on Disney+ on Mar. 26, a day before A Complete Unknown debuts on Hulu. Meanwhile, the recent Best Picture winner, Anora, also recently debuted on Hulu on Mar.17. Combine that with the box office smash hit Moana 2 arriving on Disney+, and that makes the Disney+/Hulu bundle a must-have for select fans. A Complete Unknown, Anora, A Real Pain, Inside Out 2, Alien Romulus, and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes are just some of the high-profile nominees from the 97th Academy Awards that are available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu.
