Timothée Chalamet Reunites With ‘Logan’s James Mangold for Heist Thriller That’s ‘Heat’ Meets ‘Hell or High Water’

Logan director James Mangold is gearing up to tackle his next big project following his ambitious biopic, A Complete Unknown, and the director is also planning to have the star of that film headline this next movie as well. There had been reports from Deadline earlier this week about Timothée Chalamet and Mangold reteaming for a heist thriller movie, and now it has been officially confirmed that the movie will move forward. Moreover, it turns out the project was the subject of a bidding war and has found a home at Paramount, with Mangold set to begin work on the movie soon.

According to Variety, David Ellison, who became the CEO and Chairman of Paramount Skydance Corporation in August, is credited with winning the auction for the project against other film studios. The movie, currently titled High Side, is a heist and thriller film described as equal parts Heat and Hell or High Water. High Side will tell the story of a former motocross racer who is haunted by a crash that ended his career, as well as a “long history of abandonment” in a broken family. Chalamet’s character will be drawn into a series of bank heists with his estranged brother, as the FBI closes in on them. Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein, co-chairs at Paramount Pictures, released a statement about acquiring the film, saying:

“We’re thrilled to be in business with visionary artists like James and Timothée, and exceptional collaborators like Peter and David at Chernin. What Jaime has created reflects the kind of bold, original storytelling we’re committed to championing at Paramount – and we couldn’t be more excited to hit the ground running with High Side.”

James Mangold also commented on High Side finding a home at Paramount, stating that he is impressed that the film studio is showing “a real commitment to original, story-driven filmmaking on the big screen, and this passion made it easy for Timothée, Peter, and me to land on this project. Timothée is a trusted collaborator, a generational artist, and a person I adore. I can’t wait to roll up my sleeves and work together again.” Chalamet’s performance as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown earned the actor an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

High Side is an example of another exciting original film that has been greenlit over the past few years, with the bidding war for the picture reminiscent of Coogler’s package for Sinners, which was eventually won by Warner Bros. Mangold is no stranger to crime films, having directed the Sylvester Stallone-led Cop Land early in his career. High Side will be the director’s first foray into the genre since then, so it will be interesting to see how far the director has come since then.

High Side will be written by Jaimie Oliveira, who wrote the original story treatment for the movie before it was acquired by Paramount. There is currently no production start date for the film, and it may be some time before it starts, given that Timothée Chalamet will be busy filming Dune 3, which is set to start production this summer.
