The San Jose Earthquakes made a major addition to their roster ahead of the 2026 MLS season.
German forward Timo Werner has joined the Earthquakes in a permanent deal from RB Leipzig, both clubs announced Thursday. Werner signed a Designated Player contract with San Jose through June 2028 and will occupy an international roster spot.
In order to sign Werner, the Earthquakes acquired his Discovery Priority Rights from the New York Red Bulls in exchange for $50,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money (GAM).
“We’re excited about signing Timo Werner,” said Earthquakes Sporting Director and Head Coach Bruce Arena. “I think he’ll be an excellent acquisition for our team, and we’re really looking forward to him coming to San Jose. To have a player of Timo’s caliber coming in is simply outstanding for the club and the community. I believe he’ll offer us quality on the field, experience and leadership.”
The 29-year-old has totaled 154 goals in 451 appearances since turning pro when he was 17-years-old. Werner has lifted ample trophies during his career, including one UEFA Champions League title, one UEFA Europa League title, one UEFA Super Cup and one FIFA Club World Cup. He also won the German DFB Pokal with RB Leipzig, as well as the German SuperCup.
In addition to playing with RB Leipzig on three separate occasions, Werner has also played for Chelsea, Tottenham, and Stuttgart.
On the international level, Werner has scored 24 goals in 57 caps for Germany. He helped Germany capture the 2017 Confederations Cup, winning the tournament’s Golden Boot award.
San Jose finished 10th in the Western Conference in 2025, missing out on the league playoffs.
