Newcastle United have finally agreed to sign another centre-back.
Long-term target Malick Thiaw is due to sign imminently after Newcastle agreed a deal worth £30m plus add-ons for the German international over the last 24 hours.
The 24-year-old played a few minutes of Milan’s 1-1 draw with Leeds in Dublin on Saturday, but was not involved today as the Serie A giants were battered 4-1 by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Milan boss Max Allegri was keen to keep the 6ft 4″ defender at the San Siro following his impressive displays over pre-season, and that shows based on his post-match comments on Sunday afternoon.
Speaking to Sky Italy (via @MilanPosts), Allegri revealed his disappointment at losing the centre-back, confirming that Milan are now in the process of searching for his replacement:
“Thiaw? It’s a shame he left. It’s unfortunate that he’s leaving.
“The club is working to find a replacement, that’s the transfer market you have to accept it and keep working.
“In the squad I have excellent players who have made themselves available to one another.”
As reported, Thiaw is due to jump on a flight to Tyneside on Sunday evening after returning to Italy earlier today.
He will then complete a medical and all the formalities in the next 48 hours, with a four-year contract set to be signed in the coming days.
