D’oh! Fans of The Simpsons will have to wait longer for their big-screen return. In September 2025, 20th Century Fox announced that a second Simpsons movie, working title The Simpsons 2, would take the July 2027 release date window previously reserved for an untitled Marvel Cinematic Universe film. This meant the next cinematic adventure for Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie would be arriving 20 years after The Simpsons Movie opened in theaters, an even longer gap than between when The Simpsons premiered and the first movie opened.
20th Century Studios has announced a new release date for The Simpsons 2 on Instagram, featuring a hilarious poster. The Simpsons Movie 2 will now open in theaters on Sept. 3, 2027, Labor Day weekend. The movie was previously set for July 23, 2027, nearly four days before the 20th anniversary of The Simpsons Movie. The poster announcing the release date features Homer accidentally planting the new release date flag in his foot, with the old release date scribbled out. See the poster below:
‘The Simpsons Movie’ Release Date Change Is a Big Deal
While moving The Simpsons 2 release date on the surface does not seem like a big deal, it comes with some rather significant implications. Now Disney does not have a big title to close out July 2027, a release date they’ve found great success with, as Deadpool & Wolverine and The Fantastic Four: First Steps opened on that weekend in 2024 and 2025, respectively. Part of the decision to delay The Simpsons 2 might have been to avoid competition with A Minecraft 2, which Warner Bros. also set for July 23, 2027.
Could this new release date also impact the premiere of Season 39 of The Simpsons, which, if following past seasons, would premiere in the final week of September 2027? With The Simpsons‘ upcoming season slate narrowed down to 18, Disney might delay the season premiere to give the feature film some breathing room. No plot details about The Simpsons 2 have been unveiled. This is similar to the release of the first movie, which kept things very secretive until the film opened in theaters. Stars Dan Castenella, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith, Hank Azaria, and Harry Shearer are all expected to reprise their many characters from the series.
Now the question is if The Simpsons 2 can take the crown for the biggest Labor Day opening weekend. The current record holder is Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings with $94.6 million over the four-day holiday. The Simpsons Movie opened at $74 million back in 2007. While conventional wisdom might suggest The Simpsons are not as popular as they once were, the brand has seen a resurgence thanks to their recent collaboration with Fortnite, which might build hype for The Simpsons 2. Funny enough, The Simpsons 2‘s newest release date of Sept. 3 is the same day Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings opened back in 2021.
