Action movie fans may be able to ring in the new year (or near enough) in the best way, as acclaimed director Edgar Wright’s 2025 adaptation of a dystopian Stephen King story will reportedly hit streaming in January. Directed by Baby Driver and Hot Fuzz filmmaker Edgar Wright, and starring Top Gun: Maverick breakout Glen Powell, The Running Man first landed in theaters back in November and will reportedly hit Paramount+ in early 2026.
Starring William H. Macy, Lee Pace, Emilia Jones, Michael Cera, Daniel Ezra, Sean Hayes, Jayme Lawson, Colman Domingo, and Josh Brolin among its supporting cast, The Running Man marks the second adaptation of the 1982 novel by seminal author Stephen King, remaking the Arnold Schwarzenegger-led ‘80s action classic for the modern age. Can ‘The Running Man’ Find Redemption on Streaming?
The Running Man already made its digital streaming debut earlier this month, with a new report via When to Stream now revealing that the action sci-fi outing will hit Paramount+ on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2026. While this date has not been confirmed by the streamer or the studio, the outlet is usually pretty reliable when it comes to this stuff, with the streaming release date tracking with the quick turnaround from theaters to homes that now occurs.
Hopefully, The Running Man landing on streaming will give the action movie a chance to redeem itself after bombing at the box office. Despite the combined talents of Edgar Wright and Glen Powell, as well as the capital of Stephen King, The Running Man grossed just $69 million worldwide against a budget of $110 million. The reviews were also a little mixed, resulting in respective scores of 63% and 78% from critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. MovieWeb’s own Julian Roman said of the movie…

Fans of the cult-classic 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film will be left scratching their heads as Wright nails the book’s economic and authoritarian themes, but stumbles in stale action sequences that lose intensity in a long and bewildering third act. What begins as a thoughtful, riveting and darkly comic action thriller limps to a drawn-out climax as the film’s excessive length becomes problematic.”
