Apple TV seems to have the perfect True Detective replacement, and its major casting update for season 2 makes it seem even better.
True Detective season 1 will go down in history as one of the best detective shows of all time. It was so good that none of the follow-up seasons of the series have been able to match its exceptional storytelling and critical acclaim. Interestingly, though, an Apple TV show is gradually turning out to become a worthy True Detective replacement.
The show in question is Presumed Innocent, which, like True Detective, follows an anthology format. Its second installment is all set to unfold a completely new story that has little to do with season 1. At the same time, Presumed Innocent season 2 has also made some incredible additions to its roster, which makes it even more exciting.
After True Detective Season 4, Fiona Shaw Will Play A Series Regular In Presumed Innocent Season 2
Presumed Innocent is being touted as a True Detective replacement not only because of its anthology format but also because of its many narrative and thematic parallels. In their opening seasons, both shows feature crime-solving duos who must race against time to find the truth about a murder mystery.
The protagonists in both find personal stakes in the central murder case and struggle to solve it while dealing with their own familial issues and personal demons. Although Presumed Innocent is slightly less bleak and is also an adaptation of a 1990 film and 1987 book, its similarities with True Detective are quite evident.
Interestingly, both shows will now also share a cast member: Fiona Shaw. Fiona Shaw appeared in True Detective season 4 as a supporting character named Rose. While the capacity of her role in Presumed Innocent has not been confirmed, she will likely play an original character from Jo Murray’s Dissection of a Murder, which season 2 is adapting.
Presumed Innocent Is Seemingly Avoiding True Detective’s Biggest Mistakes After Season 1
Unlike True Detective, Presumed Innocent was not instantly hailed as one of the best crime dramas of all time. The show still landed in critics’ good books and managed to perform well enough on Apple TV to get renewed for season 2. Despite not earning the same level of acclaim as True Detective, though, Presumed Innocent seems to be on the right path to becoming better in its next installment.
True Detective‘s season 2 was incredibly underwhelming, and the show is still struggling to match the highs it achieved with its opening installment. With Rachel Brosnahan as its lead and Fiona Shaw as one of its main characters, the Apple TV show’s season 2 might be able to achieve what True Detective could not: deliver a consistent follow-up that maintains the series’ overall quality instead of diminishing it.
