The Naked Gun has gone from strength to strength since being released back in August. The Liam Neeson reboot of the classic comedy franchise starring Leslie Nielsen was initially balked at by fans of the original franchise – along with a very vocal David Zucker, who slammed the new iteration on several occasions after he was shut out of the production. However, the film has followed up a strong box office performance with a chart-topping appearance on the Prime Video streaming chart as it took home the Best Comedy Award at the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday.
The Naked Gun debuted in cinemas on August 1 and, on the back of the highest reviews of the franchise, shot and giggled its way to a $102 million worldwide gross from a $42 million budget. Since then, the film has been a hit on VOD, topped the chart on Paramount+ when it first hit streaming, and is now holding off massive movies like Sinners, Final Destination Bloodlines, and A Minecraft Movie to hold the top spot on Prime Video’s movie chart.
While Liam Neeson has become known for his brutal action movies in the last several years, the actor’s previous resume is littered with several comedy movies, including Seth MacFarlane’s A Million Ways to Die in the West. With MacFarlane having a large hand in the return of The Naked Gun, adding Neeson into the mix was a genius movie that really helped sell the film as an action comedy that played to several strengths of the actor. Now the film is getting the accolades it deserves, but even with all this success, it may not mean we see Neeson slipping into the strides of Frank Drebin Jr. again.
Liam Neeson is Not Sure About Doing More ‘Naked Gun’ Movies
Hollywood has a habit of attempting to squeeze the life out of any movie that makes money, and while The Naked Gun did not bother the biggest earners of the year, it has proven that it has some serious legs. While many movies released over the summer have been and gone on streaming, leaving not so much as a smudge on the memory of audiences, Neeson’s silly comedy continues to attract attention wherever it goes.
For Neeson, however, he is not so certain that he will be back for more movies, suggesting that this revival of the franchise was a great thing to do but possibly also a one-and-done. This is perhaps not too surprising, as Neeson already has several new movies already lined up, including the soon-to-be released Cold Storage, a zombie comedy movie that could once again prove that Neeson’s laughing muscles are just as popular as his trigger finger.
Regardless of what happens in the future, The Naked Gun has been a huge success however you look at it. Not only has the movie itself been frequenting streaming charts, but it brought about a resurgence in the original movie trilogy on Paramount+ for several weeks after its release.
