It may not have been officially announced, but with multiple teasers and rumors swirling over the past few years, fans are hoping that The Last of Us will return for a third installment. With The Last of Us Part II leaving us with quite an ambiguous ending, the story is far from over with fans hoping to see what became of Ellie and Abby, as well as their loved ones.
Naughty Dog may be keeping details of a potential The Last of Us Part III close to its chest whilst it works on its new IP, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, but that has not stopped fans from speculating on who could lead the charge in the potential third installment.
Who Will Be The Last Of Us Part 3’s Main Character?
As mentioned, The Last of Us Part III has not yet been officially confirmed, so having any indication of whom the next protagonist could be is strictly speculation. We already know that Joel was our very first protagonist in The Last of Us before handing over the reins to Ellie and Abby in The Last of Us Part II, so would this mean that a potential third installment would also have a different character at the helm? If so, will it be somebody we know, or a brand-new character entirely?
We simply do not know, but over on r/thelastofus, user MorseCode00 had their own suggestion for The Last of Us Part III‘s protagonist: Tommy Miller. As Joel’s brother, Tommy stars in both games, and takes on a prominent role in the HBO television adaptation. However, we have never played from his perspective, and it seems as though this Reddit user would be interested to see how that played out.
He’s a broken man. Physically, emotionally, and psychologically. His injuries from Abby left him with impaired vision and a limp, he lost Maria, cut ties with Ellie, he has no one…We’ve played as Joel, Ellie, and even Abby, but Tommy’s story is still untapped.
With the user claiming that we “need closure” for Tommy’s story, it was not long before fellow The Last of Us fans took to the comments to share their thoughts on this suggestion.
Most Fans Are Hoping To Finish Ellie’s Story
“It would be cool to play as Tommy in sections, making a sniping mission to cover someone or a flashback,” another user suggested. “But I don’t think a whole game should be built around him. Ellie is a better protagonist.” It is this sentiment that seems to be the consensus when it comes to a potential The Last of Us Part III protagonist. Fans simply want to see Ellie return, feeling like the game would not feel the same without her presence in at least some capacity. After all, we have watched her grow from a strong-willed teenager to a broken young woman, and with no closure surrounding what happened to her, fans have been left wanting more.
“Why? The Last of Us has always been Ellie’s story. We just haven’t always played as her, and she shared it with Abby in Part 2. In Part 1, it was still her story, just from Joel’s perspective. Part 3 must have Ellie as the protagonist,” another comment read, summing up the situation perfectly. For now, we await the news of a potential The Last of Us Part III, but for now, it seems as though fan speculation will keep us going in the meantime.
