Harry Redknapp has been talking about Newcastle United.
The former Spurs and West Ham manager, discussing Eddie Howe and his team now fourteen weeks into the new season.
Newcastle United playing Man City this weekend.
A 5.30pm kick-off on Saturday afternoon at St James’ Park.
Newcastle United coming out of this international break and needing to start matching their Champions League and Carabao Cup form in the Premier League.
Harry Redknapp talking to BetVictor ahead of Newcastle United playing at home against Manchester City:
“I can’t wait for this one, this should be great, it’s a bit of a clash of styles!
“Newcastle are having a strange season, they’re doing so well in Europe but struggling in the league.
“You don’t want to be playing catch up even this early in the season.
“That win over Liverpool could be a big moment in this season. I just felt like [Man] City looked back to their best in that first half, I was impressed, and you could see the confidence back in the side.
“I can [see] Newcastle giving them a scare, but [Man] City and Haaland will have too much.
“Prediction: Newcastle 1 Man City 2
One to watch – Doku was absolutely brilliant against Liverpool, the best I’ve ever seen him play.”
My thoughts
The same as Harry Redknapp, I can’t wait for this one! The end, at last, of yet another international break and I always feel that it is far better to return with a home game after so many key players have been away.
As Harry Redknapp points out, Man City smashed Liverpool 3-0 at the Etihad ahead of the internationals. Not a huge surprise really, considering that means Slot’s team have now lost seven of their last ten matches in all competitions.
However, a bit like Newcastle United, Manchester City have had to a large extent, also experienced very different home and away form.
Pep’s side have won their last seven games at home in Premier League and Champions League, yet their last six away in those two competitions have seen them win only two, with a couple of draws and defeats at both Villa and Brighton. In their last four Premier League away matches, Man City scoring only three goals and only winning one of those four games.
Nobody needs reminding of Newcastle’s away form this season, especially in the Premier League. However, in all competitions at home, Eddie Howe’s side have won all of their last five games at St James’ Park and scored 11 goals, only conceding the one.
Manchester City have won only once in their last four visits to St James’ Park and that was in January 2024 when United came back from a goal down to lead 2-1. At the time Eddie Howe was still very short of numbers in that injury blighted season and with Sandro Tonali suspended. Pep Guardiola able to bring on top level subs whilst Eddie Howe…didn’t. Kevin de Bruyne scored a brilliant long range effort with 16 minutes to go and then a world class pass set up his fellow sub Oscar Bobb to score in added time. A cruel result Newcastle didn’t deserve.
If no similar levels of undeserved cruelty, I think Newcastle United are more than capable of getting at least a point at St James’ Park.
