The best Batman movie of all time is getting a surprising spiritual successor thanks to one huge casting announcement. As one of the most popular superheroes of all time, Batman has been adapted to all types of media for decades and has found great success in film, with some of his movies ranking among the best movies of all time.
Out of all Batman movies so far, the one widely regarded as the best is Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, starring Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Heath Ledger as the Joker. The Dark Knight has been praised for its performances, tone, storytelling, themes, and cinematography, and while there have been great Batman movies since then, none have come close to it.
The Dark Knight got a sequel four years later in The Dark Knight Rises, closing Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Now, The Dark Knight is getting a surprising spiritual successor thanks to Christian Bale’s casting in Heat 2.
Heat 2 Is Now The Dark Knight’s Spiritual Successor
Among the best crime movies of all time is Michael Mann’s Heat, starring Robert De Niro as professional thief Neil McCauley and Al Pacino as LAPD Robbery Homicide Detective Lt. Vincent Hanna. Heat sees Hanna and his team going after McCauley and his crew as they plan one big and final bank robbery.
While they try to outsmart each other, Hanna and McCauley have a lot to deal with in their personal lives, with Hanna being strained from his third wife and McCauley struggling with isolation and starting a relationship with a graphic designer who doesn’t know about his criminal acts.
Heat was a huge box office and critical success, grossing $187.4 million against a $60 million budget, and currently holds an 84% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. In 2022, after being in development for years, Heat got a prequel and sequel novel simply titled Heat 2, written by Mann and Meg Gardiner.
The following year, it was officially announced that Mann was working on a film adaptation of Heat 2, and after many obstacles in pre-production, the project was finally given a budget and a production start for 2026. As for its cast, there have been many rumors, but the only ones officially confirmed so far are Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale.
Thanks to Christian Bale’s casting in Heat 2, Mann’s long-awaited sequel is now serving as a spiritual successor to The Dark Knight, as it served as an inspiration for the best Batman movie.
The Dark Knight Was Heavily Inspired By Heat
As mentioned above, Heat is one of the best crime movies ever and one of the best movies of all time, and has been highly influential, not just in the crime drama genre. The Dark Knight is one of them, with Nolan sharing in multiple interviews that he was influenced by classics like Heat and The Godfather, and it really shows.
One of the most praised elements of Heat is its realistic approach, which is also one of the best things about The Dark Knight, as well as their use of their respective cities as characters of their own. The Dark Knight also took note of Heat’s blend of crime, action, drama, and a gritty setting, and the dynamic between Batman and The Joker is reminiscent of that between Hanna and McCauley.
Surely, Heat has no superheroes, fancy gadgets, and a villain with facial paint, the same way Batman doesn’t have the same dramatic charge as Heat (this is mostly seen in the personal struggles of Hanna and McCauley), but Heat’s influence is very clear throughout The Dark Knight.
While it might sound like a strange combination at first, Heat 2 definitely has everything to be a spiritual successor to The Dark Knight while also being a prequel and sequel to Mann’s masterpiece.
Christian Bale’s Heat 2 Role Brings The Dark Knight Full Circle
Of course, what makes Heat 2 more of a spiritual successor to The Dark Knight is Christian Bale’s casting. Bale is one of the best and most respected actors of his generation and has shown his impressive acting range across different genres. However, he has found more success in crime-related stories, such as American Psycho, American Hustle, and The Dark Knight trilogy.
Bale’s casting makes sense for Heat 2 and is truly a perfect choice, and it’s now only a matter of waiting for more information on who he will play. Bale’s role in Heat 2 also brings The Dark Knight full circle, thanks to the above-mentioned influence Mann’s movie had on Nolan’s superhero masterpiece, so Bale can now brag about starring in both the best Batman movie and the sequel to the crime classic that made it what it is.
Heat 2 is now closer than ever to finally happening, so now we just wait for an official announcement of its filming start, more information on its cast and characters, and a potential release date.
