If there is one thing that can offer vindication for a movie that teeters on the brink of being scrapped after its completion, then that is another movie from the same IP scoring a huge win on streaming. That is exactly what happened on HBO Max with The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie vaulting to No. 3 in the streamer’s movie chart almost as soon as it arrived on the platform. This is something that sends a clear message about Warner Bros. Discovery’s attempts to shelve their other recent Looney Tunes movie, Coyote vs. Acme.
In typical Looney Tunes fashion, the animated sci-fi comedy, which pairs Daffy Duck and Porky Pig in a B-movie alien-invasion spoof, has bounded onto its new streaming home with all the hyperactive enthusiasm the franchise demands. After getting a rare theatrical release in March as the first ever feature-length Looney Tunes original movie to be played in cinemas, and recouping its $15 million budget from a fairly low-key run, the movie has now moved to Max, where it was originally set to be released by WBD before its extremely positive debut at Annecy International Animation Film Festival in 2024. The full synopsis of the movie goes something like this:
“Porky and Daffy are our unlikely heroes and Earth’s only hope when facing the threat of alien invasion. In this buddy-comedy of epic proportions, they race to save the world, delivering all the laugh-out-loud gags and vibrant visuals that have made the Looney Tunes so iconic, but on a scope and scale yet to be experienced. It’s going to be out of this world”

The Day the Earth Blew Up was released to a harmonious set of reviews from both critics and audiences, with the film’s Rotten Tomatoes scores sitting respectively at 86% and 88%, which is a rare moment of agreement for any movie release. What is more, is that it all clearly proves that there is an appetite for Looney Tunes content, and that bodes well for Coyote vs. Acme’s long-awaited release.
‘The Day the Earth Blew Up’ Paves the Way for ‘Coyote vs. Acme’
There are very few unreleased movies that have had the kind of headline time and been a constant point of discussion as Coyote vs. Acme. The movie, an animated/live-action hybrid which costars John Cena and Will Forte, caused a massive outcry when WBD attempted to scrap the completed film as a tax write-off in a similar fashion to Batgirl. However, unlike that movie, Coyote vs. Acme became the new “Snyder Cut” campaign as fans and stars of the movie pushed for the film’s release.
After seeming to have fallen off a cliff with a large rock close behind it, and after two years in limbo, Coyote vs. Acme finally received a release date thanks to Ketchup Entertainment, who also distributed The Day the Earth Blew Up. The movie will be released in cinemas in 2026.
