‘The ‘Burbs’ Season 2 Should Go Scooby-Doo According to Keke Palmer as Show Dominates Streaming

In a new interview with Gold Derby, Palmer shared her hopes for Season 2, which has not been green lit, but based on the show’s performance, could certainly happen.

“I’d actually be really sad if there was not a second season because I feel like there’s more story to tell. Now that the gang is all together and everybody knows what their mission is, and now, there’s an even bigger monster over the hedge. We gotta get on our Scooby-Doo mode! We gotta get out there and solve crimes.”

The series did not follow the storyline of the Hanks movie, which delivered a creepy little self-contained story that is very different from the one that played out by the end of Season 1 of the show. While many people hate change, The ‘Burbs could not have simply retold the exact story of the movie, and it seems that those going into the series without the preconception of this being just a remake of the movie have really enjoyed it as an Only Murders in the Building alternative murder mystery show.

‘The ‘Burbs’ Does Not Rely on the Movie but Pays Tribute to It

Although the premise of The ‘Burbs – the suspicions of residents in a small neighborhood about some dubious activities of others – is very much intact in the TV show, the series is not reliant on people knowing about the movie. However, it did make use of plenty of Easter eggs for those who remember the 1987 movie very well. This included certain lines of the movie being recycled, and even an unexpected cameo by Tom Hanks, who briefly appears as Hinkley Hills founder, H. Horrace Hinkley.

“We were so excited that [Tom] said yes to making a little photographic cameo,” showrunner Celeste Hughey said about that cameo. “The Easter eggs are to really honor the fans of the movie. I wanted them to know that, as the creators of the show, we understand the movie and that it’s in good hands.”

If the success of a series is based on viewership alone, then The ‘Burbs should have no problem getting a Season 2 renewal from Peacock. As Palmer suggested, there is clearly more story to tell and more mysteries to be uncovered. The crime/dark mystery genre has been incredibly popular recently in its many forms, from Only Murders, through to more horror-orientated shows like From, so it could be a case of The ‘Burbs being a series that arrived at just the right moment to attract an audience. For now, the whole first season is available to stream on Peacock.
