The “Best Sci-Fi Movie of the 21st Century” ‘Interstellar’ Is Streaming for Free on Pluto TV & It’s a Hit

The best science fiction movie of the century is currently streaming for free on Pluto TV, and users of the free platform are (rightly) obsessed with the film. The titles of the best sci-fi film ever made, and the best sci-fi film of the 21st Century, are somewhat subjective. But major outlets often put together definitive lists to attempt to rank these kinds of categories. Earlier this year, the NY Times released its list of the 100 best movies of the 21st Century. The film in question didn’t quite reach the top spot (an honor that was held by Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite), although it was the highest-ranked sci-fi film on the list by far. The fan-favorite sci-fi film by an Oscar-winning director is available to stream on many platforms. But Pluto TV users can stream it for free.

Interstellar is the film in question, and Pluto TV users are obsessed with Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic. The movie is currently the ninth most popular film on Pluto TV. Released in 2014, the film was directed by Christopher Nolan, who co-wrote the script with his brother, Jonathan Nolan, and co-produced with his wife Emma Thomas, as well as Lynda Obst. Interstellar is often considered to be Christopher Nolan’s best movie, which says something, given his near-flawless filmography.

Interstellar stars Matthew McConaughey as Joseph Cooper, a former NASA test pilot-turned-farmer, who is recruited for a last-ditch effort to find a suitable planet for the human race to inhabit following worldwide crop blights and food shortages. Cooper becomes a member of the Endurance space mission, taking him on a decades-long journey across the stars, leaving his family behind on Earth. The official synopsis reads:

“In Earth’s future, a global crop blight and second Dust Bowl are slowly rendering the planet uninhabitable. Professor Brand (Michael Caine), a brilliant NASA physicist, is working on plans to save mankind by transporting Earth’s population to a new home via a wormhole. But first, Brand must send former NASA pilot Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) and a team of researchers through the wormhole and across the galaxy to find out which of three planets could be mankind’s new home.”

‘Interstellar’s Status as a Modern Sci-Fi Classic

It’s hard to argue against Interstellar‘s status as one of the best modern sci-fi movies. Christopher Nolan brought his signature directorial quality to the film, including plenty of time-bending plot points and impressive practical filmmaking. On the NY Times’ list of the 100 best movies of the 21st Century, Interstellar was fifth overall, and the highest-rated sci-fi film, with Everything Everywhere All at Once behind it in 13th.

Despite its lauded status, Interstellar doesn’t have the flawless Rotten Tomatoes score you might expect. The film is Certified Fresh at just 73%. However, audiences enjoyed the movie far more, as it boasts an 87% audience rating. As well as being one of the best sci-fi movies of this century, Interstellar is also regarded as one of the most confusing, alongside Nolan’s other major foray into the genre: Inception.

Alongside McConaughey, Interstellar features an A-list supporting cast, which includes Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, Timothee Chalamet, Mackenzie Foy, Matt Damon, Casey Affleck, Topher Grace, David Oyelowo, and John Lithgow.
