The first time audiences met Christian Wolff, the autistic math savant capable of dismantling entire security teams, critics didn’t quite know what to make of him. Gavin O’Connor’s 2016 thriller The Accountant landed a divisive 53% on Rotten Tomatoes, but still managed to pull in a reasonable box office and has since found new audiences on streaming. It has taken almost a decade for Affleck and O’Conner to reunite for The Accountant 2
and judging by its critical reactions, it has definitely been worth the wait.

are back as brothers Christian and Braxton, and as the sequel gives the pair a chance to play out a buddy comedy chemistry that they were not able to in the original movie, The Accountant 2 has delivered a much improved 75% Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score that suggests fans are going to love it.

Despite The Accountant’s completely split critics’ score, audiences gave the film a strong 77% Popcornmeter rating. If the same kind of jump between critics and audiences happens again with the sequel, then Affleck and Bernthal could be looking at an almost perfect response in the eyes of the most important people when it comes to movie success – viewers. The Accountant has been pulling in plenty of them across several streaming platforms in the past few months, and that can only bode well for the sequel’s box office chances this weekend.
Is ‘The Accountant 2’ Worth Watching?
A split set of reviews often makes it difficult to work out whether a film is your cup of tea or not. However, The Accountant 2’s mid-70s score from critics is a strong indication that fans will be on board for this second movie, and so it has proven with the first wave of audience reviews.
Among the critical reviews, many are quick to praise Affleck and Bernthal’s on-screen chemistry, which is what seems to make the biggest difference to the film’s overall score compared to the original movie. As the New York Times’ Manohla Dargis said:
“All that counts in “The Accountant 2” is that it’s adroitly paced, unburdened by narrative logic and buoyed by its well-synced, charismatic leads.” Meanwhile, Boston.com’s Kevin Slane added, “The end result is a sequel that’s both funnier and more violent than its predecessor, but also a lot more by-the-numbers in its approach.”
Audiences have mostly been raving too. Comments like “a thrilling sequel,” “a must-watch,” and “delivering stronger performances than its predecessor” are only secondary to the number of reviews that heap praise on the pairing of Affleck and Bernthal in the lead roles. While some have mourned the absence of Anna Kendrick in the mix, as one review put it, “Who doesn’t love Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal?”
Although the movie will certainly pay its dues when it hits streaming later in the year, its performance in cinemas on the back of good initial reviews will be an interesting sign of the times. With action blockbusters coming thick and fast, fans of brutal, violence-filled offerings are spoilt for choice. We will see in the coming days if they choose Affleck and Berthnal to entertain them this weekend.
