“That’s Not What My Geralt Would Say!:” ‘The Witcher’ Showrunner Addresses One of Season 4’s Biggest Controversies

The Witcher‘s showrunner has addressed one of the biggest complaints regarding Netflix’s adaptation, and fans might not like the answer. Season 4 of The Witcher is finally here, and, as expected, fans aren’t exactly happy. They were never going to be following the news that Henry Cavill had left the series following Season 3, and that Liam Hemsworth would replace him for the final two seasons. While many are still distraught over that change, the trailers for Season 4 of The Witcher have been the center of even more controversy from fans of Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels. The adaptation has already made countless changes to the source material, but one of the latest trailers made a big change to Geralt himself, and fans made sure their displeasure was known on social media. With Season 4 now out, Lauren S. Hissrich has addressed those very specific complaints.

The main controversy stems from a clip from The Witcher Season 4’s final trailer. In the clip, Geralt, Jaskier, and Milva are fighting on a bridge. The scene depicts the Battle for the Bridge on the Yaruga from the third book in the series, Baptism of Fire. But one line in the scene has upset a lot of fans. “‘Let’s f*cking move!’ It’s one of those lines,” Lauren S. Hissrich said to Radio Times ahead of Season 4’s release. “I mean, you never know what is going to be controversial. You never know what’s going to work. If, prior to season 1 airing, you would have told me that ‘Toss a coin to your Witcher’ was going to be a hit, that’s wild to me.”

So why has such a small line become the center of such a big controversy from within the fan base? Well, according to The Witcher fans, it’s not something Geralt would ever say. “It’s one of those things that it’s like, you may go, ‘Oh, that’s not what my Geralt would say,'” Hissrich continued, acknowledging the backlash. However, her response might upset the fans even further. She continued:

“Well, it is. It’s what our Geralt would say. And in this moment, it suits it perfectly. So I’m eager for audiences to take those moments from the trailer and actually see them in the context of the scenes.

What I think is, that line in the context of the battle that we’re in – it makes total sense. It’s also a kickass line.”

‘The Witcher’ Season 4 Has Been Slated by Critics and Fans

Not even the acting talents of The Matrix star, Laurence Fishburne, can apparently save The Witcher. With Season 4 now out, the reviews for Liam Hemsworth’s debut season have been released.

Unfortunately, the show’s downward trajectory since Season 1 continues. The Witcher Season 4 holds a divisive critics’ rating of 50% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audiences are far more certain on their stance towards the series, as it holds a painfully low 23% audience score, the lowest of any season so far. Of course, there were always going to be some negative responses, as die-hard Henry Cavill fans are still petitioning for the actor to return. But that 23% also includes ratings from more casual audiences.
