February 27 – John Textor has been reappointed as a director at Eagle Football Holdings.
A day after the confirmation of his official removal from the holding, a new filing at Companies House in the UK showed that the American businessman had returned to an Eagle Football Holdings directorship.
Earlier this week, Textor had issued a statement saying that the dispute over control of Eagle between Ares and himself would continue. Last Tuesday, a filing confirmed Textor’s exit as director from Eagle. He was dismissed on January 27 after he tried to remove two independent directors of the company to regain control.
Eagle Football Holdings Bidco is the vehicle that holds the shares and legal rights across the multi-club group, including Olympique Lyon in France, Botafogo in Brazil and RWD Molenbeek in Belgium.
Ares extended more than €400 million in loans to Textor, largely to finance the 2022 takeover of Lyon. However, the American businessman has since struggled to keep up with repayments. Last summer, Eagle sold its minority stake in Premier League side Crystal Palace to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson. The roughly €200 million raised from the sale, according to the Financial Times, was handed back in full to Ares.
The fund is now attempting to reclaim at least a further €200 million in outstanding debt from Eagle. The fund has also invested separately in several other clubs, including Chelsea, Inter Miami and Atletico Madrid.
Relations between Textor and Ares have grown increasingly strained. Eagle posted a net loss of €200 million for the financial year ending 30 June 2025, Bloomberg reported.
Meanwhile, Botafogo has been hit with a transfer ban by FIFA over an unpaid transfer fee owed to Atlanta United. A Brazilian court later upheld restrictions preventing the club from registering players or selling assets without board approval.
