Taylor Sheridan’s Underrated Action Series Will Be The Biggest Yet As Star Offers Season 3 Filming Update

Taylor Sheridan’s Underrated Action Series Will Be The Biggest Yet As Star Offers Season 3 Filming Update

While his time on Landman may be at an end for now, James Jordan is staying in the Taylor Sheridan business with the return of the creator’s underrated action series.

Having first launched in July 2023, Lioness is an espionage-driven action series primarily centered on Zoe Saldaña’s Joe McNamara, a CIA senior case officer leading the titular undercover counter-terrorism team. With season 2 proving to be a far bigger critical hit and garnering larger ratings than its predecessor, Paramount+ confirmed season 3’s development in August 2025, with filming later kicking off in October.

Now, in an interview with ScreenRant‘s Grant Hermanns for the Landman season 2 finale, Jordan offered some insight on Lioness season 3’s progress. The actor, who has enjoyed a consistent collaboration with Sheridan for the past decade, revealed that “we’ve got about six weeks left” of filming on the next chapter of the action series, saying his focus at the moment is on his character rather than the recently confirmed Landman season 3.

In looking at how the show is evolving with its next season, Jordan began by chuckling as he denoted all of Sheridan’s shows “are magnificent” and expressed his wish to “be on all of them, but I’ve got to sleep sometimes.” He then went on to acknowledge Lioness as having the largest scale of Sheridan’s roster, recalling having filmed in Mallorca, Morocco and all along the East Coast in season 1, while season 2 further raised the stakes with its air-based action sequences

James Jordan: Season 2 took us to the air. We implemented the aerial element of combat for these special operators. We brought in some fantastic pilots in their helicopters, and we saw that.

Careful not to venture too far into spoilers, Jordan did promise “the scale is even bigger” coming into Lioness season 3, with the production at the time of the interview being set in North Texas, but the story is set to “take us all over the world.” Praising the new episodes as being “fantastic,” the star went on to explain that the new season will all further “the microscope on what these folks do,” taking viewers “a little closer” into who they are and “why they’re so devoted to Joe“:

James Jordan: The writing just gets deeper and deeper, and I think that’s what audiences want. They’re introduced to a character, now they want to see what’s under the skin of that character, what really makes him tick. And Taylor being an actor himself, I think he wants to investigate character. He doesn’t care much about plot, neither do we. We want to know what makes these folks tick, and audiences do too, and that’s what keeps them coming back, I think. So, we’re excited to explore that as well.

Jordan has starred in the Lioness cast since its launch as Two Cups, an experienced special operations soldier and one of the key members of Joe’s QRF team, alongside Jill Wagner’s Bobby, LaMonica Garrett’s Tucker, Austin Hébert’s Randy and Jonah Wharton’s Tex. While having showcased plenty of tactical skills across both seasons, the season 2 finale notably almost saw Two Cups meet his demise, when the team’s journey to Iran to take out two nuclear scientists leaves him and others wounded from gunshot wounds, but narrowly surviving until reinforcements’ arrival.

Thus far, plot details have been kept under wraps for Lioness season 3, though the cast has expanded with the additions of Sheridan veterans Elizaveta Neretin and Ian Bohen. The Mayor of Kingstown star is set to appear in a recurring role as an international operative Joe interacts with in her latest mission, while the Yellowstone and Wind River alum will appear in a series regular role as a by-the-book Delta Force operator and K9 handler.

While Jordan may have been careful not to share too many details about Lioness season 3, what he did share does point to Sheridan continuing to learn the lessons from the show’s divisive first season by maintaining a focus on his characters, even as he expands the show’s action scale. Season 2 did still take the action overseas and deliver the high-stakes shootouts expected of the series, but also focused more on Joe’s home life in a way that was more fleshed out than its predecessor.

Zoe Saldana as Joe in Lioness

How Zoe Saldaña’s Lioness Became Taylor Sheridan’s Most Underrated Show

Although Taylor Sheridan has numerous shows under his belt, Lioness, which stars Zoe Saldaña as the lead, is easily among his most underrated series.

With Jordan teasing that season 3 will continue to direct a microscope at Joe’s QRF team, it will be interesting to see if Lioness characters like Two Cups and Tucker have more of their backstory and personal lives explored. Apart from the reveal of Max Martini’s Tracer being an ex of Bobby, very little has been shared about the personal lives of anyone other than Joe, giving Sheridan the chance to do something different in the new season.

The other major takeaway from Jordan’s Lioness season 3 update is that filming is already a good majority of the way done, having just a month left until it’s finished. Looking at previous seasons’ turnaround times from filming wrap to release, this could put Sheridan’s underrated action series back on the screen before the end of the summer. However, as he is currently preparing for the premieres of The Madison and Yellowstone spinoff Marshals, Sheridan and Paramount+ may also elect to save the series for a late 2026 return.
