Taylor Sheridan’s 100% RT Crime Thriller Is His Best Series Yet

Taylor Sheridan’s 100% RT Crime Thriller Is His Best Series Yet

Between all of Taylor Sheridan’s celebrated and popular shows, most of which are streaming on Paramount+, Mayor of Kingstown season 4 is his all-time greatest achievement so far.

While much of Mayor of Kingstown season 4’s success has to do with co-creator and co-star Hugh Dillon, along with showrunner Dave Erickson, there’s no denying that Sheridan’s original vision for the series has paid off incredibly with an all-time great fourth season.

Mayor Of Kingstown Season 4 Is Sheridan’s TV Masterpiece

While there are certainly cases to be made for 1923 and Landman, Mayor of Kingstown season 4 is arguably the best thing Sheridan has ever done in his TV career thus far. What’s most impressive about the epic crime thriller is how the series essentially reinvented itself after its season 3 finale, which left the future of the franchise wildly uncertain while also setting up the most intense stakes yet.

If you haven’t watched any of Mayor of Kingstown by now, which consists of four seasons and 40 episodes, with a reduced 8-part fifth and final season on the way, you’re missing out on one of the best and most overlooked crime thrillers on modern streaming. The series is led by a strong performance by Jeremy Renner, who plays a fixer named Mike McLusky in a Michigan prison town, which is based on where co-creator Dillon grew up.

Mayor of Kingstown season 4 earned a rare 100% Rotten Tomatoes score and an 87% RT audience score. Each season of Mayor of Kingstown has gotten better from a critical perspective, tightening its focus to become one of the most immersive and tonally definitive prison drama series ever made. Although the series as a whole has a 65% RT score, season 4 specifically raised the bar of the series to unprecedented heights.

Mayor Of Kingstown Should Continue After Five Seasons

Mayor of Kingstown season 4 was so outstanding that a fifth season felt absolutely necessary. Even though Mayor of Kingstown was the least-viewed of the three main Sheridan series that were released in Fall 2025, including Tulsa King season 3 and Landman season 2, it was the most critically acclaimed.

After some initial uncertainty, Paramount officially renewed Mayor of Kingstown for a fifth and final season, but only ordered 8 episodes instead of the usual ten. This likely has more to do with production costs than anything else, although it is true to say that it was the “least-viewed” new Sheridan show of 2025’s final quarter.

Mayor of Kingstown season 4 became one of those head-scratching cases in which the show deserved more viewership than it was getting. A fifth and final season will likely do the show justice, although it will have some huge shoes to fill after season 4’s acclaim. However, since season 4 really felt like a refined reinvention of the series, it’s a shame that Mayor of Kingstown will end so soon after its peak, as it could remain Sheridan’s best TV project for quite some time.
