Sydney Sweeney’s Erotic R-Rated Thriller Takes Down a Modern Action Classic at the Box Office

Sydney Sweeney’s Erotic R-Rated Thriller Takes Down a Modern Action Classic at the Box Office

After a string of flops, Sydney Sweeney can do no wrong with her current thriller, The Housemaid, which is nearing the $200 million mark at the box office. It’s an incredible recovery for the star, who came under fire last year for selling everything from her bath water to denim jeans. All that’s in the rearview mirror, though, as not only has The Housemaid served as Sweeney’s redemption, but the unpredictable R-rated erotic thriller has managed to surpass some pretty good movies along the way, including a modern action classic.

As of January 14, 2026, The Housemaid has brought in a total of $193,212,884 at the global box office, which places it right above Denzel Washington’s 2014 vigilante action thriller, The Equalizer. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, Washington’s flick came in just shy of the $193 million mark during its theatrical run, which was enough for it to spawn two sequels (with more on the way). Obviously, The Housemaid and The Equalizer couldn’t be more different in both genre and tone, but at their core they’re two movies about people making sure those who wronged them get their comeuppance. As one user put it in their review of The Housemaid on Rotten Tomatoes:

“Great movie! Sydney [Sweeney] is the avenger we need!”

If you’ve seen The Housemaid, then you’ll know what the reviewer is referring to, but if not, let’s just say that by the time it’s all said and done, Sweeney herself becomes somewhat of a vigilante hero like Washington did in The Equalizer. That’s where the similarities end, though, including how both movies were received by fans and critics. The Housemaid is both Certified Fresh and Verified Hot on Rotten Tomatoes, holding impressive scores of 73% and 92% respectively. By contrast, The Equalizer is none of those things, but still holds its own with a 61% score from critics, and a 77% rating from fans.

Will There Be a Sequel to ‘The Housemaid’?

As mentioned, The Equalizer’s box office haul of $192 million and change was enough to warrant two sequels, so one would think that with The Housemaid surpassing those numbers, a sequel would be inevitable. That line of thinking would be correct, as Lionsgate has already given the go-ahead to The Housemaid’s Secret, which is the second book in author Freida McFadden’s trilogy that Sweeney’s films are based on.

While it remains to be seen if Amanda Seyfried will show up, cast members already announced to be returning include not only Sweeney, but Michele Morrone as well. He portrayed Enzo Accard in The Housemaid, the Italian groundskeeper for the Winchester’s who ended up playing a pivotal role in the film once the huge twist was revealed. Paul Feig will once again serve as director for The Housemaid’s Secret, and Rebecca Sonnenshine is also on board to pen the script. Though the film’s official synopsis has yet to be revealed, a quick look at the book’s summary gives us insight into what it will most likely be about:

“In The Housemaid’s Secret, Millie Calloway takes a job with the wealthy Garricks, only to uncover a chilling web of lies and betrayal. When she’s framed for murder, she must outwit danger and expose the truth in this twist-filled psychological thriller.”

No release date has been set for the sequel to The Housemaid just yet, but we expect it to drop at some point in 2027. In the meantime, you can check out the first film now playing in theaters everywhere, and look for it to arrive on digital in the coming weeks.
